IMMIGRATION.
A San Francisco paper reports
great interest concerning California
having been awakened in the United
Kingdom, by nu agent of the Immi
gration Association who went there
with samples of California produc
tions. It was asserted that the mis
sion would result in bringing a great
many people to that Stale. About
a hundred Englishmen lately arrived
in California, the greater part with
the intention of settling in the coun
try. To read of the active and in
telligent operations of the California
Immigration Association must make
every right-thinking patriot in this
kingdom yearn for an era of common-sense
here. When will the
agricultural lands of these islands
be taken out of the hands of mon
opolists, and an invitation be ex
tended to civilized and thrifty peo
ples to fcctllc them. The coolie
labor that the national resouiccs arc
being expended upon will never
build up the nation. It. will enable
a few to amass wealth. Many of
these, when they have made their
pile, will away from our chores and
cia1-"- other countries with it. Some
of 'hat remain will be a hin-
drai j true national progress.
They ence of their wealth will be
used 1 have affairs conducted so as
to bcirv it their own selfish interests.
One clay the inhabitants of this
group will have to settle the ques
tion among themselves, "Ave the
Hawaiian Islands to be a big planta
tion, peopled by abject pagan serfs
and the few lords they serve ; or are
they to be the site of an enlightened
and progressive nation, witli a popu
lation an example to tho world in
intelligence, morals and thrift?"
The three or four hundred Mongoli
ans that were landed from the
steamer on Friday last form the
latest contribution to the wrong side
of the scale in the determination of
that question.
EDITORIAL NOTES.
A spectator at a spiritualistic
seance, at Stockton, Cal., made him
self the materializing medium. He
sprang forward and captured the
spirit with profane'hands. It proved
to be Klein Reynolds, the announced
medium of the occasion. It is sur
prising that those frauds continue to
make such a good living off the
people of California, when the' arc
never investigated but to be exposed.
An American Congress of Churches
held its initial session at Hartford,
Connecticut, recently. It is said to
have been "the outgrowth of the
movement begun by tho late Dr.
Muhlcuburg and others, looking to
the gradual restoration of a common
faith and agreement in fundamen
tals." The likelihood is that n reli
gious confederation of one mind, ns
to what constituted "fundamentals,"
would be the fcmnllest sect in Christ
endom. Thai is the rub.
Sheriff Cunningham, of Stockton,
California, has sot a good example
to men in authority elsewhere. Ho
has interdicted a "slogging" match,
and his purpose is to put an end to
such exhibitions in that place.
Anglo-Saxon children have been
taught at school to look upon Spanish
bullbaiting as tho rankest barbarism
in the midst of civilization's glitter.
Yet that "sport" is not a circum
stauce in brutality to such shows as,
under tho false utuno of tho ' jnauly

General Sheridan, interviewed by
a lopoitor, haiil ho was satisfied llio
Union was to enjoy, under President
Cleveland, tm era of pence and pros
perity never before attained by thai
country or any other. II is to lie
hoped this happy prediction may be
in "real measure fulfilled. Not die
leat beneliecnt. lesnll of such a
golden term would lie to make the
people forever more sceptical of what
politicians told them from the slump.
So far there is no sign of the crash
of matter and the wreck of worlds
anticipated by some as the conse
quence of a Democratic Presidency.
Col. Francis dc Wiulon, an Eng
lishman, has been appointed Governor
of the Congo State. The colonel
was Lord Lome's aide-de-camp in
Canada, where lie failed, or rather
did not try, to make himself popular.
He felt lite position and tried to
make everybody else feel it to be
more overwhelmingly important than
the democratic Kanucks would allow.
It would bo interesting to know what
inllucnccs encompassed the ignoring
of the paramount claims of Mr.
Henry M. Stanley to the Governor
ship of the Congo. No man living
could be better lilted or more justly
entitled to the position than the in
trepid and talented American ex
plorer who made that African Eden
known to the world.
