GREAT BRITAIN'S MARITIME
SUPREMACY.
From btatistics published in the
New York Sun wc obtain the follow
ing figures concerning the merchant
marine of the principal maritime
nations. The sea-going vessels of
all the nations in the world arc esti
mated at 50,000, aggregating 2o,
000,000 tons, and as will be seen
from the following tabic, Great
Britain far outstrips all competi
tors:
VccK
22,500

Tim-.
11,200,000

France,
Italy,
"Russia,

:?,200
2,300
Confining
the comparison
to
steamships, British preponderance
is still more marked, as will be seen
from the following figures:
Steamers. Ton.
All Nations, 7.704 9,332,000
Great Britain, 4,G49 5,919,000
France, 458 007,000
United States, 422 001,000
Germany, 120 470,000
Spain, 282 305,000
Italy, 135 100,000
Holland, 127 155,000
Russia, 191 119,000
Both in the number of vessels and
in tonnage, Great Britain is more
than equal to France, the United
States, Germany, Spain, ltaby, Hol
land and Russia put together.
Great Britain builds her own ves-selsj-mans
there, carries nearly the
whole of her own trade with the
world and no small part of the
oceanic trade of other nations. In
the language of the titm:
"England's bteatn tonnage is al
most ten limes as great as that of
her nearest rival, France. It is ten
times our United Slates steam
tonnage, and forty times Ittissia's.
The British llag covers nearly two
thirds of all tiic ocean steamers
afloat."
EDITORIAL NOTES.
The (Jazcttc has information by
the Zcalandia. to enable it to revive
the statement of contemplated im
provement in the 1'aciiic Mail ser
vice. According to the reported
plan, the fast Atlantic liners, the
Alaska and Oregon, arc to be put
on the route. A packet will make
communication between Aucklnnd
and Fiji, and the steamships will
proceed fiom the latter point direct
to Sydney. The transcontinental
time is to be reduced, and altogether
the journey between London and
Sydney is lo be brought down to
thirty days.
To-day the first of a scries of
articles descriptive of the Govern
ment schools of Honolulu appears
in the Bui.m;tin. This one is on the
Fort Street School, and in succeed
ing issues the Iloynl and the Poliu
kaina Schools will be discussed in
order. These articles, written by a
member of our staff, will form a
comprehensive account of public
'Educational work in the capital of
the kingdom. The numbers con
taining these reports will be excel
lent ones to send abroad, as scarcely
a better criterion of the standard of
a country's civilization can be given
than its educational system.
The price of sugar has risen from
1.87 cents, on April loth, to 3.00
cents, ou May Siith. This increase
doubtless makes nil the difference
between loss and gain on many
plantations. Those that squeezed
tho smallest profit out of the lowest
prices have a prospect of handsome
dividends from lids scnsoti's crop.
The depression lias not been nn un
mixed evil, for It lias induced extra
oidlnary efforts in the direction of
more economical methods In culture
and iiiamifactuic. An Impetus,
thai must be in great measure last
ing in results, has also been given
to the cause of diversified Industries.
