PERILS OF THE STREET.
The police need some sliiring up.
Piles of lumber are left here and
there on the sidewalks at night with
out lights to warn pedestrians of the
great peril to their limbs. This nui
sance is particularly rife in the
Chinese quarters, but other parts of
the town are not free from similar
evidences of slothful patrol by the
public guardians. There is, or was
a few eveninss aco, a very danger
ous pitfall in the sidewalk at one of
the darkest points on that miserably
lighted thoroughfare, Queen Street.
The shock sustained by an unsus
pecting pedestrian, in suddenly
stumbling into the cavity, is quite
sufllcicnt to produce the most serious
results in the cases of delicate per
sons. It is disgraceful that the
capital of a pretentious kingdom,
comprising so much of wealth and
refinement among its inhabitants as
Honolulu, should have foot-paths
and police supervision of them
scarcely better, if equal, to those of
the rawest mining or lumbering vil
lage on the confines of civilization.
Surely this leproach can be removed
whether wc get municipal incorpora
tion or not.
Montreal papers received by last
mail confirm our estimate of the
account recently sent broadcast,
asserting a slight upon the Queen at
tho banquetof the National Club.
They also show that the reports of a
small-pox epidemic in th.it city have
been grossly exaggerated. There is
no more of that disease there, in
pioportion to the population, than
there was in this port on the anival
of the Yamashiro Maru. Most of
such rumors derogatory to the repu
tation of the Canadian people and
commercial metropolis represent the
lasting spite of James Gordon Bennett
for a slight himself and party re
ceived from Ottawa society during
the regime of the Marquis of Lornc
and Princess Louise. All through
the recent troubles the Jlerahl had
nothing but ridicule and false re
ports of reverses for the brave citizen
soldiery of Canaifa, and unmerited
praise and credit for victories never
won to bestow upon the murderous
Indians and half-breeds. In pleasing
contrast to such conduct may ho
noted the tone of the respectable
press of the Noithcrn States toward
Canada. The Detroit papers, in
particular, are cordial and even en
thusiastic in congratulating the
Dominion upon its management of
the first war over conducted by it
without aid from the Mother Country.
The Alia California, discussing
the latest rumor of General Gordon's
survival, attributes the story to the
barbarian predilection for hero-worship
and .superstitions belief in tho
deathlessness of great men.
In case any doubts may have been
occasioned the public, regarding the
arrival of the steamship City of
Sydney this week, by the published
statement that she is to be put on
the Japan route in place of the
wrecked City of Tokio, the agents,
Messrs. Hackfeld & Co., desire us to
say that they have advices that the
first-mentioned steamer is coming as
advertised on her regular voyage to
the Australian Colonies.
Tho Chinese Admiralty some time
ago suddenly changed from British
to Gorman naval drill. Radical
changes made by the German olllccr
in command were too much for tho
Mongolian ninriues, however, and
the experiment was abandoned nnd
Captain Lane, of the British navy,
asked to return. Chinese nature is
not sulllcicntly mobile to bear an
abrupt change of system in anything.
Perhaps the Government of that
empire regarded Germany, as the
more recent enemy of France, the
better sources from which to obtain
