DIRECTIONS TO HOUSEKEEPERS.
To obviate sonic of the nuisances
which the carelessness of house
keepers is responsible for, the State
Boaul of Health of Louisiana has
sent out a circular. The directions
aie applicable cvcrywheie, and we
quote the greater part:
" Keep the yards of premises fiee
from accumulations of vegetable and
animal refuse, flitch the heat of
sununer will lot and render olfen
sive. to the senses and injurious to
health by contaminating air and
"Fill nil low plates. Disinfect
drains and low spots by the fiee ap
plication of unslaked lime, or by a
thorough sprinkling with chloiide of
lime or solution of copperas.
"Never allow stagnant water to
remain under the house.' Establish
drainage to street gutter, or lill up
existing holes with river-sand.
"Have all vaults on piemises
deodorized and disinfected with a
solution of copperas. Two pounds
of copperas dissolved in a gallon of
water added to the contents of fold
vaults w ill do much good, ltcpcnt
this application eveiy two weeks.
All trash, egctablc and animal,
should be disposed of by burning it
in the kitchen stove. This can lie
done at no expense. You thus get
lid of matter which if allowed to
lemain even a few hours becomes
offensive. You assure your own
comfoit. itnpiovc the sanitary con
dition of your premises, and accom
plish the great woik of disposal of
garbage by cremation.
"Abiief trial of this suggestion
will convince housekeepers that it is
as easy to deposit all such matter in
thestoe, where it is immediately
consumed and Finally disposed of,
as in a disgusting garbage-box.
"The Hoaul of Health advises
that hydrant-water be filtered before
used for di inking or cooking pur
poses. Cistern-water is liable to
become contaminated, but can be
purified by sinking in the cistern,
immediately behind the faucet, a
bag of charcoal. One ounce of
peimanganate of potash, dissolved
in a gallon of water and added to
the contents of cistern, will produce
an excellent result."
"We can speak from our ow n ex
perience of the ease and cleanliness
with which kitchen refuse can bo
disposed of in the range or cook
stove fire. Sanitary Engineer.
