According to the report of the
Special Deputy Collector, the im
ports of raw sugar nt San Francisco,
from the Hawaiian Islands for the
year ending 30th June last, amount
ed to 1C9,391,000 pounds, the
largest quantity from these islands
for any corresponding twelve months
previous. For the five years ending
with the bamc date, the Hawaiian Isl
ands sent 581,209,710 pounds, while
the aggregate quantity from all other
sources in the same time, was 90,
209,134. Comparing 1884-85 with
1880-81, the quantity was more
than doubled. The crop for the
current year will probably be still
larger, as there are favorable re
ports from all the plantations. The
crop never looked better, the
acreage is greater, and methods are
more economical than ever before.
It is claimed that a thoroughly
developed system of irrigation will
add to the agricultural wealth of the
State of California $100,000,000
annually. On tin's subject, the $'.

gation lias been mainly applied to
fruit and vegetable culture, but with
the increase of small holdings and
the prosecution of diversified indus
tries, its value will be more ,fully
developed. The result of thorough
cultivation, and abundant water
supply, in connection with the fer
tile soil and the steady heat of the
valleys of California, will, in the
future, be almost beyond the limits
of cool calculation." The same
words apply with even greater force
to the Hawaiian Islands, and es
pecially to Oatiu. Its products, in
the future, may be increased a
thqusand fold by similar means. A
wide-spread S3rstem .of irrigation and
the influx of large bodies of indus
trious inhabitants are all that this
island wants to convert the mythical

Something was wrong yesterday
either with the moon or with Thrum's
almanac. The latter had an invisible
eclipse of the moon arranged to
come off at Honolulu last evening.
The moon herself changed the pro-
gramme. After moving well up in
her silvery track, her lunar majesty
proceeded to creep slowly into the
pennmbrn, and having afforded all
,. interested a chance to gaze up upon
her shaded disc, then marched slowly
out again into the clear aziue.

The war cloud in the cast seems
lo have lifted for tho present. Ne
gotiations between Great lhitain and
Russia have advanced to a point at
which both patties express them
selves pretty well satisfied. Russia,
however, has not receded from her
position in Afghanistan, and prob
ably does not intend lo. England on
the other hand, though, wildly ex
cited at the news of the Russian
advance some six months ago, has,
after sober rcllection, arrived at the
conclusion that her Indian Empire
has nothing to fear from the move
ments of Russian troops in the Af
ghan territories. Steps have been
taken to sreute the transquilily of
her Indian subject whatever the
Czar and the Ameer may do. While
negotiations have been in progress,
the defences of the northern front
iers of India were being strengthen
ed, and are now considered impreg
nable. This being tho case very
likely accounts for the apparent in
difference with which the old lion
contemplates the movements of his
adversary in the east.
