Tlnee associate members etc added
to the roll. A motion to sifllliatc

the gist of which was on the
contin side. The matter was ref cried
to a committee consisting of lion.
A. V. Judd, Rev. S. K. Bishop and
Mr. T. R. Walker. It was deter
mined to send the General Secretin',
Mr. S. D. Fuller, to the California
State Convention to he held at Xapa

W. C. T. U.
The Woman's Christian Tempci
ance Union held their monthly meet
ing in the pailois of the Y. M. C. A.
yesterday afternoon. There was a
picjtty good attendance, and the pro
ceedings were of an interesting
natuic. Letters wcic read from
Miss Willard, President of the Inter
national Union, and Mrs. Leuvitt,
w ho lately gave a series of lectin cs
here. The latter wrote that she had
had vciy good "success in New
Zealand, and was going to Austialia,
whcie she expected to spend a
month. A eiiculai letter fioni the
Rev. C. II. Spurgeon, of London,
addressed to Mr. S. M. Damon, was
lead hy Mrs. Damon. It lccom
mended the Rev. Mr. Noble, who
will shortly pass tluough here on
Ills way to the Colonies, speaking
very highly of him as a tempciance
worker. Sept. 18th.
ISLAND OF NIKOA.
Capt. Kibling, of the schooner
"Waieliu, reports having made a two
days' visit to Nihoa. About twenty
native passengeis landed and spent
the night ashore. They found that
the lire, started by the Honolulu ex
cursionists a couple of months ago,
had not extended over more than
about twenty acres. It had, happily,
lett the palm groves unscathed.
Captain Kibling bi ought away a
sample of the Nihoa soil for ana
lysis, lie believes it has no com
mercial value as guano.

SO FAR ENCOURAGING.
The recent course of lcetiues
In ought forwaid under the auspices
of the 1'. M. C. A. has been very
well patronied. The same rcinntk
applies in the caso of the lecture of
Monday ovening on General Grant.
It may be questioned if the "Hub"
itself would have tinned out as large
a proportion of its English speak
ing population as Honolulu tlnow
into the Y. M. C. A. hull to hem
Mr. A. Drown on the Yellowstone
and Mr. Dane on the Illiine, tho
Navnl Unities of the Rebellion, Con
stantinople, and General Grant.
The way in which the several lecture
announcements was responded to is
one of the best evidences that could
bp produced of a high degree of lit-
crnry culture and intelligence. The
audiences, it may be obscived, weio
highly cosmopolitan in their make
up. All the English-speaking popu
lations of tho woild weio well lepre
scnted. And although the subject
matter of some of the lectin cs, at
llrst view, would seem to lie of inter
est only to Americans, it was clcaily
shown that the affnhs of the Ameri
can people- nie fully recognized as
possessing a peculiarly intimate con
nection with the condition of human
society tluougliout the world. That
n course of lectures of the character
to which we have been ticalcd during
the past month could piovc a suc
cess in this city ought to be sulllcicnt
pi oof to the world nbioad that the
Hawaiian Islands sue not such a
picscivc of heathenism as many peo
ple imagine. The notices of these
intellectual cnteitainincnts will, with
out doubt, produce a favorable im
pression nbioad. They will be as
surances to tourists that cultured
society in Honolulu, despite the
