A CRAND SCHEME.
Wc print to-day the prospectus
issued by the Land and Colonization
Company. Tlio document explains
itself. A company is proposed to
be organized for the purpose of
taking up vast areas of now all but
unpeopled solitudes on this island,
and throwing them open to popula
tion. The lands described aie lich
in natural resources. Once this
company is started, the wilderness
of silence will resound with the hum
of industry and enterpiise. These
lands will furnish not on!' comfoit
ablc but also beautiful homes for
thousands of inhabitants, for it is
dilllcult to conceive of more delight
ful landscapes than those of the
ranches enumerated in the prospec
tus. Success to the scheme means,
so far as can be foreseen, a great
future for at least one island of this
group. And it will be the inaugura
tion of a new era in the history of
the Kingdom, for if its affairs are
well administered, there is no doubt
this company will be the pioneer of
similar organizations on other is
lands. The idea of systematic
colonization may be new in this
latitude, hut it has been worked out
in older'countries, very satisfactorily.
It seems, indeed, to be the only
feasible plan by which the beautiful
valleys and hills of Oahu can be
utilized, in a way to be of the great
est benefit to the greatest number.
To the tourist or visitor riding over
the Ilonouliuli, Kabuku, Kawailoa
and Yfaimea Ranches," the question
recurs every hour and at every mile
of his progi ess, what kind of man
agement or rather mismanagement
could have pi availed in the past to
suffer these lands, capable of yield
ing rich returns of the most valuable
staples of tropical products, to be
locked ti) in cattle paddocks? The
new scheme is auspiciously set forth
oyer the names of some of the most
solid men of Honolulu. This of it
self will inspire confidence in its
success. It will also be seen that
the present proprietors and lease
holders of the lands intended to be
settled are ready to enter into the
enterprise by taking one-third of the
whole stock, thus assuring foreign
capitalists that it is no visionary
"South-Sea Scheme" to which their
attention is directed. It is to be
hoped, should the project come to
maturity, that a careful selection
will be made from applicants of the
best possible class of people to be
come the future proprietors of the
soil. The de-nationalizing of the
Hawaiian Kingdom, by permitting
either China or Portugal exclusively
to colonize its lands, ought to be
carefully avoided. To introduce
either Chinese or Portuguese, or
both, in preponderating numbers,
would bo destruction instead of de
velopment. The English races,
under such circumstances, would
have but ono course open to thorn
pack tip their traps and go, and
with them would depart, too, the
promoters and directors of the com
pany. A word lo tho wise is suill
uient, and the persons who have
taken the business in hand will not
likely be foolish enough to mani
pulate matters in such a way as to
commit domiciliary suicide.
A CHALLENGE ACGEPTED.
Kihtok Uui.i.utin: In your issue
of tlie 19th hist., appears a piece
from the pen of n person, calling
himself J. M. Dowsett, and set off
by tho hcadiug, "All for a Dollar!"
I have taken, and accepted it as a
challenge, and shall light him with
hie own weupon, viz,, the pen.
Wc have had stock injured by
parties shooting plovers on our
ranch, and in order to protect our
stock from lawless sportsmen, were
obliged some three years since, to
forbid (through the papers) every
one from trespassing or shooting on
this ranch, under penalty of the
law. Tie saj's, ""We had been
shooting down the mountain slopes,
and ignorant of where or on whoso
land it was that shooting was pro
hibited," etc. Was he ignorant of
whose land lie was on, when in the
face of the remonstrances of a
friend, to the contrary, ho shot and
killed a sheep belonging to Mrs.
1 did charge him one dollar for
trespass and certainly should have
Btted him according to law, had he
refused to pay it. I charged him
all I could. If having to nay out
one dollar has chafed him, he had
better rub a little mutton tallow on.
He rode into our yard in a very
pompous and self-important manner,
and wanted to know what I wanted
of him. Ills manner nettled me,
at which I was brusque as he terms
it. lie failed to say in his letter,
that when my man called out to him
he started to run in another direc
tion, but thought better of it after
ward. He also says, " Sporting friends
beware," and, "Readers, draw
your own conclusions." Good advice
if they will profit by it, and 1 hope
his readers will come to the conclu
sion that there is one place on the
slopes of Halcakala, where they can
not trespass with impunity. lie
has done me the favor (for which I
am thankful to him) to advertise
the fact that all trespassing and
shooting on tills ranch is forbidden
by law. HoiiATio B. Bailey.
