POLICE!
Reference has often been made in
this paper to the manner in which
the suburbs of the city arc not
served by the police force. In the
suburban, as well as in many parts
of the interior sections of the city,
the genial countenance of a Hono
lulu policeman rarely presents itself.
The protection afforded to the homes
of some of the largest tax-payers in
the city by the police is both in
sullicient in quantity and inefficient
in quality. In other and less pre
tentious cities, policemen arc told
off to different streets, and arc ex
pected to keep faithfully on their
" beats," clay or night as the case
may be. Here, how ever, the parts
of the city most in need of police
men being within hailing distance
are the very places where the officers
are never seen at all. Private resi
dences, left in charge of women and
children during the day, would be
supposed worth a little looking
after, but they do not get it. There
can be no good reason why the
police force should not be distri
buted through the city in such a
way as to be within call of any one
in need of their services. Residents
of the outskirts complain that while
the men are down town during the
day, juvenile and other depredators
enter their premises, help themselves
and treat the objections of women
and servants with contempt. Once
sure that their names are not known,
they practise their pilferings in the
most independent de'il-ma'-care
fashion. "With the police force pro
perly distributed where they would
be likely to do some good, these
petty depredations would soon come
to an end, and owners of domestic
valuables, human and otherwise,
could come down town to their
avocations enjoying a comfortable
sense of security that is now denied
them. The commodity is paid for
but not delivered.
EDITORIAL NOTES.
The Presi, with the aid of an ass
and an owl, attempts to break the
force of our vindication of the
course we pursued with regard to
the Farini Opera Company. Onr
contemporary's indifferent success
in this effort may, perhaps, cause it
in future to avoid going out of its
way to impugn tho motives of other
papers in their dealings with matters
of public interest.
A gentleman complained the other
day of an overcharge by a cabman,
who exacted a dollar from a lady for
driving hor from this side the second
bridge, Ntuianu Valley, to Kobello's
lane, Falaraa. Tho cure for that
evil is not publicity in tho news
papers, but arraignment in the
Police Court. Honorable cabmen
are to bo had in Honolulu, if one
only knows wheietolook for them.
Several instances hnve come under
our notice lately, where cabman have
not charged regular patrons all that
the regulations nllowed them. There
would bo less complaint of extor
tion, probably, if people frequently
using carriages inado the acquaint
ance of the drivei s on a paiticular
stand, and always ordered their
canlages from there when conven
ient. THE GOVERNMENT NURSERY.
, .Editoh Bulletin t--In your issue
of the Ctn mst., appears
a letter
written by a certain John 'Kidwell.
The character of that man is so well
known that tho letter answers Hsojf,
Should, however, thcro be any
party .that has not found him out
as yet, or might possibly credit his
assertion, I hereby state that I
never sold any plants from tho
Government nursery, else I would
havo accounted to my superiors for
the money received. I defy John
Kidwell to name tho lady or ladies
that told him to that effect.
The words "told me so" arc very
convenient to parties of his stamp
when they want to fling dirt, but he
will find it pretty hard to stick.
Whether I grow "sickly rubbish"
I leave the community to judge.
That plants will sometimes die
many of his former customers who
have paid hard cash for them arc
best able to testify to.
