"WHAT PUZZLES THE SAILOR."
To know if prisoners nrc really
lured out to do the work of honest
tradesmen, as we aio cicdibly in
formed is the case with the painting
on a new building on King street.
To understand how Mr. Pcavcc
could "repudiate an agreement"
that never passed beyond the stage
To know why the Oceanic Com
pany could not charter one of the
several inter-island steamers, that
nrc well fit for the service, to take
the place of its defaulting steam
ship, and why Ihe Government
should accept a sailing vessel to
carry the regular mails if a steamer
could be obtained by the contractors.
THIS WAY BONNEFIN.
The following is from the Federal
Australasian of Oct. 3rd:
Here's a piece of good news for
the northern sugar-planters: "The
editor of the Queensland Review
telegraphs from Brisbane that Mr.
Bonnclin, of Paris, reports having
completed the discovery of the art of
extracting the juice from the sugar
cane by which he can manufacture
white sugar in two hours, and place
colonial sugars in Melbourne at 8
per ton. The invention destroys the
beet industry, and settles the labor
question to a great extent. Mr.
JJounelin refers to the Society of
Arts, 'Paris, lie will visit Australia
if cncouiasrcd." I3v all means let
him be encouraged. Let M. Bonnc
lin come. His very name proclaims
for him that he has none but a good
end (bonne jiii) in view.
AVe have much more correspond
