A rich man in Davenport, lowa,
hired a man to build a cistern, agree
ing to pay ?12 for the job. After it
was done the lich man seized the
laborer's tools and locked them up,
alleging that the cistern leaked. It
was really a ruse to make the work
ingman take less pay. The latter
dissembled his rage and induced the
rich man to descend into the cistern
to examine it. 2STo sooner had he
done so than the laborer dtew up the
ladder and stood guard over the cis
tern with a club, vowing that the
other should not come up until he
had settled the bill. The imp isoncd
one yelled "Murder!" and "File!"
and a crowd of his ncighbois gather
ed, but, when they learned the
trouble no one would interfere and
they lot him stay until he liquidated.
