FRIDAY, DEC. 18, 1885.
SENSITIVENESS.
The public are frequently warned
by Government apologists that if
they do not suppress criticisms of
the acts of the King's ministers, and
become the most humble and obedi
ent servants of those ofllcinls, they
will inevitably bring disaster upon
the country. Opposition to the
Government, we are told from day
to day with the most persistent iter
ations, moans everything that is
malicious, unpatriotic and dislo3'al.
The dceply-dycd scoundrelism of
political opposition parties has been
denounced so often, since the days
of Hampden, that executive bodies
must be sorely tried in patience
and endurance. It would indeed be
extremely convenient if every con
stitutional power at the present day
could dispose of opposition after the
manner of Henry the Eighth. But to
the extreme annoyance of modern
potentates, tho headsman and the
hangman have lagged behind among
the campfollowcri of civilization,
and are called to the front only
when assassins and traitors arc to
be dealt with. Under these circum
stances, it seems most likely that
even the rulers in charge of the
destinies of Hawaii will be obliged,
a little longer, to face the music of
vigorous opposition, And it is the
more certain that they will continue
to find these nasty thorns of opposi
tion among the roses of place and
power, inasmuch as they have them
selves to thank for their cultivation.
That tho credit of the Kingdom is
not altogether satisfactory nbioad
is a condition of things the responsi
bility for which is very convenient,
and doubtless necessary, at the prc
esnt juncture, to transfer from the
narrow shoulders of the administra
tion to the broad backs of the oppo
sition. The state oflicials would
doubtless be woll pleased to pose
as martyrs ot the agitation set
afoot by tho opposition. And this
is about the burden of the political
war cry of the coming election on
tho Government side. Such a cry
is little less than an admission of
weakness. Tenderness to criticism
is not characteristic of conscious in
tegrity. And it it no fault of the
critic if the members of Government
are over sensitive to investigation.
There is little use in Government
apologists howling at the disastrous
consequences to the credit of the
country abroad produced by popu
lar criticism at home, while the
policy which keeps our credit at a
low ebb outside of the Kingdom
also produces and maintains a chro
nic state of dissatisfaction within it.
Circumstances, beyond tho control
of the Government, may have ren
dered it impracticable to redeem the
silver certificates with gold coin, as
provided by act of the legislatuic,
but any Chinaman's clerk could
- have informed the Minister of Fi
nance and his colleagues of the con-
' summatc absurdity of Ministers ex
pecting to maintain credit abroad
while unable to meet their legal
obligations at home. When tho ad
ministration is conducted in such a
manner that nil legitimate drafts on
, tho TrcasuVy wic piomptly met, and
when appropriations are framed
with a view to tho elllcient mainte
nance of public service tableau of
public figure-heads, and when public
improvements take the places of
. empty state pageants, the credit of
the Kingdom both at homo and
abroad will be established beyond
the reach of tho Opposition to hurt
it. The credit of tho countiy will
stand or foil on its merits, opposi
tion or no opposition. It is only
necessary in proof of this statement
to refer to Great Britain, the "United
States, or Cnnndn, -where opposition
pailics attack the policy of their
respective Governments with un
sparing nml often with unscrupu
lous virulence. For our Govern
ment apologists (o keep up a Con
tinuous whining outcry about tho
disastrous effects of n frco discus
sion of Government policy upon the
credit and good name of the King
dom is neither more nor less than
unmitigated nonsense.
THANKS.
Wc take pleasure in publishing
the following note, !cli is highly
complimentary to thu generosity and
hospitality of Honolulu people:
Editou Bum.ktin : Allow me,
through your columns, to return nij'
sincere thanks to all those that
waited upon and administered to
my father, the late Mr. J. W.
Ramey, of your city, during his ill
ness, and those that attended at the
last sad rites, especially to Mr. E.
II. Woodworth and his estimable
lady, and to George W. Do Long
Post, No. 15, G. A. R., to Rev. Mr.
"Wallace and all others. He leaves
two children to mourn his loss my
self and a sister. I thank all for
their sympathies at this my bereave

Lord Cairington, the new Gover
nor of Now South Wales, was ex
pected to land in Sydney on Dec.
12th, and high holiday was to be
held on the occasion.
A vote of want of confidence in
the Government was to bo decided
in the New South Wales Legislature
on the 2nd inst.
The Brisbane correspondent of
the Sydney iVetos stated that "Cap
tain Everill emphatically denies tho
statement of natives having been
killed by the exploration party in
New Guinea. Dr. Haake also indig
nantly denies the rumor of an in
discriminate slaughter of the natives.
Members of the cxploiation party
were attacked several times, and
they had to defend themselves ; but
the attacks wore mere skirmishes,
and nothing serious. Dr. Haako
says that he believes the party did
not kill a single native. Captain
Everill intends before leaving Bris
bane to wait on the Premier and
thank him for the liberality shown by
the colony of Queensland, the deep
interest taken in the welfare of the
expedition, and the prompt action
by the Thursday Islanders in dis
patching a relief party to New
Guinea." The liver ascended by
Captain Everill has been named the
Strickland, after Sir E. Strickland,
President of the Geographical So
ciety. There is a deadlock in Tasmanian
political aifairs, which it is hoped
will be broken when the Legislature
shortly meets.
Four tenders were received by
the South Australian Government
for the construction of a railway
from Pine Creek to Palmerston, a
distance of 145J miles. That of
Robinson, Haig and Jesse is tho

tract will be 721,080; if with
Coolie labor, 038,-185.
Measures are found necessary in
Adelaide, S. A., for providing work
for a large number of unemployed
laborers. Public works arc being
forwarded expeditiously with that
object.
