STATEMENT.
THE undersigned, a Committee of Di
lcctois of tlio Equitable Lifo As.
surance Society of the United States,
appointed to formulate the views of the
Board on tlio atHantages offered by the
Society to the public, icport:
1st The Society issues oil the approv.
ed forms of assmanee, including Ordi
nary .Life, Endowment and Tontine po
licies. It is immatciial to the Directors
which form of policy is taken by in
tendine: assurcis.
2d The Life and Endowment forms
of policy provide for annual cash divi
dends and a suirender value; arc indis
putablc after three years and payable
immediately after proof of death.
3d The premiums on a Tontine po
licy are the same as on the Ordinary
Lite, but, while the latter is only pay.
able in the eVent of death, the holder of
the Tontine policy has the right.to draw
the whole of thcrcscne and the accu
mulated pi oil ts in rash at the end erf a
stated period; thus, during his own life
time, after his producing years aie past,
he can, without any laiger piemium
than on an ordinary pbhey, secuie these
greater advantages.
4th Experience shows that tiie icturn
paid in cash on matuiing Tontine po
licies approximates to or exceeds the'
amount of premiums paid by policy
holders, so that the average cost oi tho
assurance will bo only about the interest
on the premiums.
5th Tontine policies, like others, aro
paid in full in the event of death at any
timo during the term of tlio policy, nnd
are incontestable after three yeais, and
payablo immediately after duo proof of
death.
Cth Ei-pcriencc shows that tho mor
tallty is lower among Tontine policy
holders, as the better lives seek this
kind of assurances, which is a consider,
able source of profit.
7th Tontine policies will be made
non-forfcitable under the laws of tho
State, if so desired at the time tho as.
surance is effected.
8th Tho Tontine system is fair and
just; its accounts aie accurately kept,
beparato from all other business; tho
funds judiciously invested and improv.
eu, anu tuo nccumuiaicu prottts laltlt.
fully guarded andpiopcrly appoitioncd.
9th Tho Society has since its organi.
yation transacted a larger amount of
new business than any other company,
whiio its new business for tlio first half
of tho present year is $1,750,000 larger
than that of the first half of 1884. It
has Assets of fj,G0,000,000 ; over ?14,000,
000 of Surplus, nnd its rcitio of Surplus
to Liability is gicatcr than that of any
other company.
