SATURDAY, .TAX. 0, 1880.
Following is the translation of a
letter published in the Pac Ainu,
i native paper, :i few days ago. It
was addressed to one of the Island
sheriffs, and illustrates the methods
by which the present administration
intend to secure the scats of their
nominees at the ensuing election.
"Kikalm," it may be necessary to
inform Kuglish readers, is native for
Mr. 1 II. Ilaysclden:
Ilo.vu.u.r, lice. M, 188.').
Love between us. The old gen
tleman has received your letter and
has taken note of the contents, lie
wishes to help you, and will not
refuse ; but he thinks you had better
wait a little until His .Majesty arrives
it . Then you two will
confer together concerning all mat
ters in that district. The old gen
tleman thinks that the money of the
opposition is as good as thrown away
this time. What harm is it if they
have got in their hands all the tax
receipts y That is no diillculty. The
tax collector can give out duplicates
to those who have not their original
receipts. You two should provide
beforehand some hundreds of tax
receipts like this here a blank is
inserted of a form of election tax
receipt with the word "Duplicate"
in English written in, leaving the
place blank for the name of the
person ; then if the first one has
been sold for money or if it has
been simply lost, can
give them new papers after this
form. Moi cover, you two perhaps
had belter make known this arrange
ment to the people of your districts
and of your whole island: then the
other side will be afraid to buy up
the tax receipts.
Your true friend,
A petty, aspiring politician issu
ing electioneering instructions for
the guidance of the sovereign is a
spectacle that Hawaii, of all consti
tutional manarcliics in the world,
alone can furnish or tolerate.
Mr. Kawainui's bulletin, yester
day, said that the Government have
set apart Sil,000 forelection purposes
in this district, but the money is being
used up so fast for gin that, at $2.. "50
per dozen, they are afraid it will not
In the scurrilous and generally
mendacious campaign squibs, of late
uttered ly the Advertiser, there is
noticeable a large amount of sneer
ing at the youthfulness of some
Oppositionists. This is the encour
agement tiie Government party lias
for young men to interest them
selves in the welfare of the country.
Although no one will expect to find
every young public man blossoming
fortli as a Salisbury or a Gibson in
a da', still the infusion of young
and patriotic blood into the manage
ment and direction of national
affairs is greatly to be desired.
