FREEDOM JUSTIFIED BY HER CHILDREN.
By tlu recent lowering of the
franchise in Knglnnd, the cleetoiate
was increased from three millions to
' ilvo millions. This tremendous ac
cretion was from the working classes.
Yet the new House of Commons ap
pears to be as able, intelligent ami
wcll-eilnciitcd a body us preceding
ones. This goes to prove that the
working people of the United King
dom have justified the trust reposed
in them, contrary to tho apprehen
sions of a disastrous democratic
deluge. They have not been car
ried away by preposterous notions
of a betterment of their condition to
be achieved by having their newly
acquired power wielded by members
of their own class. Their good
sense has been displayed in select
ing ability, intellect and experience
to serve them in the councils of the
nation, rather than the untrained
zeal without knowledge of would-be
reformers from their own ranks.
EDITORIAL NOTES.
Cold waves in the Southern States
may turn the eyes of injured fruit
growers there to a country whose
tropical balminess never fails. Come
hither, where the orange and the
myrtle ever bloom, and Jack Frost
is never numbered among "th0
burglars. ft ,
Mr. Ilcydon, Minister for Justice
in New South Wales, has resigned
his position owing to the decision of
the Ministry to propose a. property
tax. Would it not be a funny thing
to sec a Minister in Hawaii resign
ing on account of disagreement with
his colleagues, or for any constitu
tional reason, such as the vetoing of
one of his measures?
In this issue is given a descrip
tion of the yacht now building to
defend American honors in this
year's international race. It would
seem that sailing racers are running
to the same standard of inutility
that has characterized racing row
boats for many years. Speed and
nothing else is the desideratum.
Therefore, marine architecture for
peace or war is not going to benefit
much, if any, from the models of
craft, with centerboards and leaden
keels, which win gilded trophic1.
