THE TELEPHONE COMPETITION.
Doubtless the establishment of
competition in telephony lias made
the service cheaper to single sub
scribers in Honolulu, but, in propor
tion to the number of instruments
in use, the public convenience is not
us well served by the two companies
as it was by the otic first in the field.
Jn private connections many people
find that those they have most fre
quent desire to communicate with
are on another line from themselves.
The situation is even more unsatis
factory to business houses, that, as
a rule, require connection with both
lines to get the full benefit of the
convenience. Thus they arc given
the alternative of subscribing to
both lines, or dispensing with the
large telephonic custom afforded by
one or other of them. Instead of
being cheaper, thercforo, the service
to business people is much dearer
under competition than under the
monopoly. It would be a great
boon to the business and social life
of the city if the two lines could be
amalgamated. Cannot the ' stock
holders of both sec their interest to
be in harmony with the public bene
fit in this mattery
Tho Prime Minister of Denmark
has introduced a bill in the Folke
thing for the revision of the constitu
tion. A similar service is required
to be performed in this kingdom,
but from the nature of things the
movement can hardly be hoped to
emanate from any Ministry. The
Hawaiian constitution is framed so
as to prevent its being improved by
any internal process, except in the
unexpected eventuality of those who
revel in its archaic privileges volun
tarily abandoning the sordid and
selfish standpoint from which they
now view the matter, and coining to
an examination of the question in
the light of equity, human rights
and the experience of other nations.
Otherwise, an effort to have our con
slitutiqn altered in consonance with
modern free representative govern
ment must originate with the people
out of ollicc and be pressed by them
so strenuously and unanimously that
the office-holders cannot succcsfully
