MONDAY, MARCH !l, 188G.
The arrival of the Llco. AV. Kkler,
yesterday, from .San Francisco, with
dates to the 27th February, has
furnished the largest budget of
news, as regards interest and variety,
brought by any mail for many mouth
past. The llrst item announced that
the Oceanic Company had purchased
the steamships Australia and Zea
lamlia and would muI them under
the Hawaiian Hag, created no little
excitement on Merchant street. This
was soon, however, overshadowed,
as the post olllee boxes began to fill
up and be opened, with the startling,
though nor altogether unexpected
announcement that the treaty was
apparently (loomed. Probably with
in two nours ot tnc ai rival oi me
steamer, thcic were very few persons
in the city who were not talking
Treaty. The attitude of Congress
seemed generally to be hostile to its
continuance, and the tone of the
despatches indicates that the ter
mination of treaty relations, as they
stand at present, is a foregone con
clusion. Another item of news of very
great interest to this country is the
probability of cable communication,
at no distant day, with the rest of
the world. Negotiations are taking
practical shape, and there is no
doubt the Governments of the United
States, Great Uritain, the Hawaiian
Kingdom and the Australian Colo
nies will be only too glad to give
their hearty support to any reason
able arrangements that may be pro
posed. The addition to the Oceanic Com
pany's stoamship lleet, if it secures
return to our former regular fort
niuhtlv communications with the
Coast, will be hailed with extreme
satisfaction by the public.
As regards Kuropean affairs, the
"Eastern Question" seems to have
received a temporary quietus, the
Greeks having been sat upon by the
The annexation of the Sandwich

come to grief. Of course the Ger
