FRIDAY, APRIL 10, 188C.
THE PLUCKY CREEK.
Tho skeleton in the closet of
European politics for the last
quarter of a century or more, lias
been the so-called Eastern question.
The existence of tho Turk on the
west side of the Bosphorous has
long ago been voted a nuisance.
The persistent intrigues of Russia
for possession of tho coveted Medi
terranean front door to her territo
ries has also been determined on as
a contingency to bo most carefully
guarded against. Roth parties have
been pretty skillfully checkmated
by the powers ; the territories of the
one being contracted by the erec
tion of new states, and the ambition
of tho other disappointed by being
excluded from their possession.
And tho process seems destined to go
on until the Sultan finds his dominions
getting too small to contain him.
Tho plucky little Kingdom of Greece
is the latest claimant for a share of
the sick man's goods. "While other
states have been extending their
borders, she very properly thinks
herself capable of handling larger
areas than she now possesses. What
ever politicians may think of it, the
sympathies of the world will flow
spontaneously toward the Greek.
Greece, the ancient homo of heroes,
philosophers, poets and patriots,
pushing her claims in opposition to
Turkish interests, will be backed by
the moral support of the civilized
world, whatever that may be worth.
If alio succeeds in wresting from her
enemies material concessions, in
spite of the injunctions of her big
neighbors, to.kcep still, she will have
friends enough to rejoice with her.
Her being evidently urged on by
Russia will make it extremely diffi
cult for British statesmen to de
cide what to do about it. The
Premier, Mr. Gladstone, is no
lover of the Moslem. Whatever
goodwill ho ever entertained towards
Turkey was pretty effectually eradi
cated by the Bulgarian massacres of
'70. His opinions of the Turk
was expressed with no uncertain
sound at that time. His
sympathies may be counted on
in favor of the extension
of Greek influence in Southern
Europe. Tho successors of the
heroes of Salamis and Marathon, in
this fresh development of resusci
tated energy, will show the "mottle
of their pasture " by pressing their
cause to a successful issue. And if
Europe sees fit to fight about it, on
Europe will rest the responsibility.
Next mail will probably bring news
of further diplomatic entanglements,
or report progress in the solution of
the Eastern question through the
only means by which it is generally
believed possible to bo solved to
fight it out.
We should not consider "an ap
propriation to found and equip a
technical school" in this kingdom a
"misappropriation," that is, a wrong
appropriation. Indeed, wo should
regard it as one of the best possible
uses to make of a portion of the
public funds. Wo also endorse the
"suggestion" that "the school be es
tablished at Honolulu," or some
where in its neighborhood. Neither
Lahainaluna nor any other place on
tho other islands or this island, can
possibly furnish the facilities nnd
advantages for such a school as the
capital of the country.
It is "suggcsted"that the author
of tho "suggestion" in this morn
ing's paper "should try and under
stand his subject before he begins
to write upon it!" By consulting
:i dictionary lie will bo enlightened
(o tho extent that "mlsnppropria.
tlon'1 moans wrong appropriation.
Ami tlicn ho niny be able to coinprc-
lieiul "how there could be misappro
priation of public funds by Legis
lative enactment.' Moreover, if
be will kindly glance over the article
to which he alludes, he will find
that it docs not contain tho word
"misappropriation," from beginning
to end. The word placed at the
top may bo appropriate, or it may
not ; but does not in any way affect
the substance of tho article. It is
further "suggested" that our gifted
contemporary has discovered a
