SATURDAY, APRIL 17, 188G.
It is pretty well understood that
"opium smuuggling has become sys
tematized, and through its rnmlllca
tion society has been demoralized, or
atleast its moral tone bns been sensi
bly lowered ;" and it, might be added,
is practised in quarters and by per
sons from whom better conduct
should be expected. Not, be it
understood, by the class recently
accused by a morning contemporary,
or, at least, not mainly by that
class ; but by members of the so
called national party. Nevertheless,
we are unable to sec why it should
be " impossible to prevent opium
smuggling," or reduce it to insigni
ficant limits, if all departments and
officers of government were deter
mined upon doing so. But we can
well understand its impossibility so
long as tho illegal and iniquitous
practico is sympathised with, proba
bly winked at, possibly shared in by
those who should uphold the law.

They arc greatly indebted for
their success to the kind friends,
who so cordially volunteered their
aid in the many departments, to tho

The object for which the lunches
were given is accomplished, and a
surplus remains to be appropriated

A letter from Mr. J. M. Lee,
keeper of the Halfway House, Kau,
dated April 14, gives the following
account of the state of the Volcano
when he visited it on two recent
"I suppose people in Honolulu
are anxious to hear news about the
Volcano, and as I just came down
from thero last night I can give you
the very latest information regard
ing that matter. I was there last
Thursday, and from the bluffs I
observed quite a heavy smoke pour
ing out from the crater of Ilale
maumau. This smoke had com
menced four days previous and had
been steadily increasing all the
time, so the people up there ex
pected the fire to break out every
minute. They have been disap
pointed so far, but there is no doubt
that in a few days the fire too will
"I took another trip yesterday
and went right down to the crater,
hoping to see some sparks of lire at
the bottom; but the old Madame
was not reauy yet wuu ncr louei.
I suppose she don't like to show
herself till she can dazzle her
wooers in her former splendor.
The smoke was much denser and
heavier now than last time I was
up ; it rolled out like clouds from a
big chimney. Sometimes it was
very calm and only a faint blue
smoke was to be seen, but that only
lasted a few seconds, and then
again with many doubled force it
was pulling away, filling up the
whole crater, so we could hardly see
anything around us but smoke. It
must bo very active underneath,
and you can plainly see that power
ful forces are working and working
to break through. Right on the
edge of the hole where tho smoke
comes up it has formed a sulphur
bed, which has been observed only
tho last two days, and a little dis
tance towards west there is a whole
system of steam, forming a long
line ; this is above the crater itself,
commencing close to the edge. The
new lake is quiet, and all the power
Bcems to be concentrated in the
crater of Halemaumau."
A letter from Mr. J. II. Many, of
"Wilder S. S. Co.'s Volcano House,
dated April 12, says tho sido from
which steam has been lately rising,
now emits denso volumes of daik
blue smoke. The whole chasm
around Halemaumau has become
fearfully hot within the last few
days. The placo the smoke princi
pally issues from seems tp bo a cono
and is forming sulphur very fast.
The natives says the present indica
tions aro very favorable for a sudden
and mighty fire, and expect to see
Kilauea in its former activity before
' long. In speaking of tho Volcano,
Mr. Geo. Bcckley says that the
smoke ascending from tho crater
can be plainly seen at Ililo.
