TREES AND SHADE.
Shade in a tropical country is
most as essential as water, and the
most grateful and agreeable shade
is that produced by trees and
shrubs. But it is quite possible to
have too much of a good thing, and
portions of Honolulu arc believed
to have too much shade. In sonic
cases trees arc too numeious, and
in others the foliage is too abundant
where trees aie not too man. Per
haps the best general rule for the
placing of trees and regulating their
foliage, is to sec that their disposi
tion and arrangement ate such that
every spot may be reached by the
sun's rays at some time of the day.
It would be well, too, in planting
trees for shade to select the kinds
that produce fruit also. One fami
liar with Honolulu can scarcely avoid
the conviction that too little atten
tion has been given to this point
here. The reduction of shade, where
it has become too abundant, by the
removal of trees or the branches of
trees, is an operation icquiring
judgment and care, to avoid un
necessary destruction or unsightly
disfigurement. A fool may "rush
in" where an angel would "fear to
tread" and in a few minutes hew
down a valuable tree that has taken
many years to raise. Tree-destroyers
are seldom tree-planters. A
k stately ttce may be ruined, rendered
shade, and con-
verted into an
object of concen
whilc standing, by
lack ut common-sense, taste and
C.re in trimming. Illustrations of
"these facts arc not diillcult to find,
and will naturally occur to the minds
of many readers. "We venture a word
or two of advice to those who have
decided that they have too much
shade and are determined upon
lessening it : Beforo you begin to
thin out your trees, ascertain their
relative worth, and do not commit
the folly of destroying a valuable
tree, when the removal of a com
paratively woithless one would have
satisfied the same purpose. In
trimmimr.. select such blanches as
will not mar the symmetry of those
remaining, and be careful to remove
them in such a way as not to leave
unsightly gashes behind. Trim,
but do not butcher.
