THE CR-EAT SEAL OF ENGLAND.
The mete holding of the Great
Seal of England entitles its foittin
ato custodian lo some $00,000 a
year, to Immense patronage in
Church '""I Stnto, to lie Speaker of
the House of Lords, n Privy Coun
cilor, and the head of till Judicial
authority In the Kingdom, to ho de
signated Lord High Chancellor of
Grcal Britain, uild Keeper of the
Koyal Conscience, and to rmik (next
to the royal family) the becond sub
ject in tho realm. It is very difll
eult, if hot impossible, lo say. when
England llrst hud a great seal. .Seals
woro not much used by our Anglo-
Saxon ancestors, but came largely
into fashion during tho Norman
reigns. The gilt crosses or maiks
of Edward the Confessor nnd other
Saxon kings can bcarcely be called
seals, and pat took more of the char
actor of signatures of an illiterate
age ; but a grand and perfect senl of
William the Coniueior exists, hav
ing the monarch crowned nud tin oil
ed on the one side uud mounted on
horseback on thu other attitudes
which have been iilvaiinbly observed
to the present day. One remarkable,
circumstance connected Mith the
Great Seal is its progressive growtli
in sizo as time advanced. Origin
ally, 800 years since, not larger than
the lop of an ordinary modern tea
cup, it lias been gradually enlarged
from age to ago, till it offers now
the si.o and appearance of a muilln,
and requires lo be Inclosed in a tin
box for protection. Indeed, so
cumbrous and unwieldy had the
Great Seal become that some three
or four years sinco nn act of Parlia
ment passed containing very extra
ordinary piovisions, directing that
all the miiior, nnd many oven of the
more important documents passing
under it, .should for the future be
authenticated by a paper wafer, of
moderate size, which should be gum
med on the Instrument, and be
deemed and taken lo be the Great
Seal itself.
The Great Seal has only three
times been lost twice temporarily
and once permanently. James II.,
on leaving tho Kingdom on his abdi
cation, threw the seal into the
Thames, whence, however, It wa
next morning fished up and brought
to Whitehall. Lord Hldon buried
it in liis garden in Queen Square
during one night when his house
caught fire and he thought in the
confusion it might be stolen.
"And," writes the Cliauccllor in his
diary, "when the llro was extin
guished I quite forgot in the morn
ing where I. had buried it, 'and .while
the carriage waited to take me to
court, my lady and I uud all the
household were digging with pieces
of stick, till we luckily found it."
Lord Thurlow, who always held it
during the night in his bed-room,
had it actually carried off by burg
lars, from whom it was never re
covered. A Privy Council was
called the next da', a new seal was
rapidly made, and during the re
mainder of Ills continuance in ofllce
Lord Thurlow invariably doposited
it of a night under his pillow.
Down to 1818 tho Great Seal
itself was made of copper; since
then silver has been the metal em
ployed. It is in two halves, some
what like two very thick brigltt tin
saucepan lids, lltting closely to
gether, their inner surfaces deeply
sculptured with the royal doviccs
intended to be formed on tho wax
when squeezed between them. In
struments having u limited duration
are scaled with yellow wax. Others,
supposed to exist in perpetuity, such
ns patents of peerage, etc., are ex
emplified under green wax ; and in
tho case of some letters patent,
likely to bo exposed to a good deal
of knocking nbout or journeying
from place to place, such as were
the asslzo commissions, the wax seal
was stamped after being ingeniously
inclosed in cream-colored leather,
