BALLADE OF THE THROUGH EXPRESS.
Oh, Engineer of the 'l'liiougli Kxpre
To San Francisco bound,
God speed you through tho wilderness
And tho shadow of night profound;
King out your cheery uhKlo sound
Fast peak mid lone pine tiee,
And tho grave scarce maikcd by tho
As you rush from sen to fcca.
Oh, Engineer of thcThiough express,
There's never a good man gow neb
Holds pioro of the strands of happiness
Thau 1110 Mound your light hand
As you look nnd lean ftoin your Iron
With your elbow on your knee,
While the whlillng, whiillng wheels go
As you lush from sen to seal
Behind you a bride In her wedding
And n Gcneial renowned;
And 11 ."Hilling babe with a golden trcs,
Liken ehciub with sunlight crowned;
And a murderer leady to confess,
Should you fall htm, or even he
May. outrun the fangs of the law's
As you rush from sea to seal
Oh. Engineer of tho Through Express

SUNDAY LAWS IN CERMANY.
An interesting return has just
been presented to the German Par
liament showing nil the laws which
have been passsd from time to time
in that country with regard to Sun
day labor. These laws arc classi
fied in the return under three heads.
The ilrst comprises those which go
back as far as 1750, and have for
their object the secuiity of freedom
for Sunday services servants and
apprentices, for instance, were not
to be hindered from attending. The
laws of the second period have a
wider scope, their object being to
obtain "public rest," not only dur
ing divine service, but duringthc
whole day, and to forbid any work
capable of disturbing this rest. So
far, however, work hi private places,
in factories, etc., was not interfered
with. These two classes of laws
were designed, in fact, simply in tho
intci est of religion. It is different
witli the third and more recent
period of legislation, which exhibits
a purely economic and social point
of view, and statts from the princi
ple that Sunday is a day which must
be "sanctified" to physical repose.
These laws have, therefore, a wider
scope, and forbid work in factories,
A BATTLE-FIELD LOVE STORY.
Apropos of romantic marriages,
there is probably no man in Con
gress who can show a better record
than Representative William J.
Stone of Kentucky, who takes Oscar
Turner's place in tho House. Tho
story of Stone's tqrriblo wound on
tho batttlc-ficld was told not long
ago, but tho best part of the story
was left out,
Tho battle where ho lost his leg
was near Cynthiana, Ky. lie was
in the Confederate service, and after
tho battle was lying on the field,
gasping for water, with his leg shot
away almost to the hip. A Federal
soldier saw him and asked him if he
was not thirsty. He replied that ho
was, and tho Yankee went off and
brought back a canteen full of
water. lie raised tho wounded man
and gave him a drink, and then in
kindness left his own cautcen by the
side of what ho thought to be the
dying rebel, lie said:
"1 will leave this, as you may
want to drink again after awhile."
Mr. Stone lay upon the battle
field for some time, hugging tho
canteen to him. Tho troops had
noyv all left tho field and nono but
tho dead and dying remained. At
this tiino a number of young ladies
from the town of Cynthiana came to
visit the battle-field. They had
gathered up the ramrods scattered
among tho dead, and one of them
finding Mr. Stono still alivo and the
hot sun beating down upon him,
took a bundle of these ramrods and
stuck them into the earth, making a
half-moon of paling-fence about his
head. Over this sho spread her
shawl and did what she could to
case him, This young woman is
now Mrs. Stonq, 0110 of the accom
plished women of our Congressional
society. Stono fell in lovo with her
on tho battle-field and after his
recovery ho succeeded in winning
