A HEN WHICH HOVERS KITTENS.
A Maltese cat hi East Los Angeles
increased tho population of the
earth by six kittens on Saturday,
and during the day went off to
meditate by herself in the garden.
Upon returning she found a large
and motherly hen hovering the kit
tens, who were peeping out from
under the feathers and crying anxi
ously for food. The lien refused to
abdicate in favor of the cat, and the
cat, recognizing tho superiority of n
biped creature, failed to insist upon
her rights. The result is that tho
hen still holds tliu fort and hovers
tho kittens, and the cat mother sup
plies them with nourishment during
tho brief moments that the hen is
absent in search of food. Like Toe's
raven, the hen "still is sitting, still
is sitting," while the poor mother
cat's eyes are gazing at her both
day and night. Los Angeles

CAMBETTA'S BRAIN.
Gambctta's brain was stntctl by
A. Bloch a few months ago to be
of unusually small size, weighing
only 1,100 grains, or U8.I ounces.
At the meeting of the Socictc A' An
thropologic of March 18th Professor
Duval added, further, sonic inter
esting details of its conformation
and structure. In comparison with
brains of subjects who were known
to have been of deficient mental
powers such ns possess only a feeble
development of the third frontal
convolution, Gambctta's brain was
found to have an extreme develop
ment of this convolution, and the
fissures very numerous and very
complicated. This development
furnishes confirmatory evidence of
IJroca's discovery of the localization
of speech in this convolution. In
addition to other peculiarities, the
right quadrilateral lobe was found
to be very complicated, with numer
ous fissures in its lower pait; and
the occipital lobe was extremely re
duced, esncciallv on the rieht side.
DEVEL0PINC EARLY.
Mexicans may be slow in many
things, but not slow to love. The
laws of Mexico claim girls at 12 and
boys at ltf years old arc eligible to
marriage, and it is not an unusual
sight to (see a woman who looks no
more than 83 years of age a great
grandmother. As children the Mex
icans arc rather pretty, but when a
girl passes 20 years sho gets
"mucho-iinicho" avoirdupois, and
at 80 years she sports a mustache
and "galwnys" that would cause
young bachelors in tho States to
turn green with envy. The men,
on the contrary, arc slim and wiry,
and do not boast of their hirsute
charms, especially when in company
with women, ns they have little dc
siie to call attention to the contrast,
and the diamond ring finds other
means to display than stroking and
twisting an imaginary mustache.
Yet this exchange of charms inter
feres in no way with love making,
and the young man wafts sweet
kisses from his finger-tips to the
fair no, dark damsel, and enjoys
it as much as if that black, silky
down on her lip were fringing the
gateway to his stomach ("Corre

ON THE WARPATH.
A resident of one of our valleys,
whose name wo will not mention,
went to Silver Reef some months
ago and entered the butcher busi
ness. Having been married but a
few months before ho went to the
Reef, lie had a longing to sec his
wife, who was living on the ranch
with the family of his partner, so
the other day lie mounted a horse
and started for Spring valley, ai riv
ing there at 1 o'clock in tho morn
ing. Hp entprcd bis wife's room,
lit the light, and to his great amaze
ment and horror sitting up in the
bed was tho handsome district peda
gogue, who had been aroused by the
entering of the husband, while nest
ling nt his side lay a form completely
hidden from view. Tho staggered
and horrified husband on beholding
this spectacle, witli blood in his
eyes and murder in his heart, drew
his knife out from the back of his
neck, whipped out a .pistol, and tho
pedagogue, beholding these wailikc'
demonstrations, gave n you and
crawled under cover. The yell
aroused the other sleeper in tho bed
nnd up popped the yellow head of
ono of Charley Lyttlo's boys, who
went from Eagle to attend the term
of scjiool in Spring district,
It appears that tho man's wife
had left that very day to join her
husband at tho Reef, and had taken
a different road from tho ono tra
veled by her husband, and tho
teacher and scholar were given the
room. The teacher now never re
tires at night without first trying
the pupil's head to the headboard
pf thp bed, so tnt lie cannot p-t jt

that ho cannot pull it up over his
