MRS. CLEVELAND'S TITLE.
A pretty stor3', if one could bo
liovo it, is told by tiio J'nris corres
pondent of a Vienna paper, A short
time agon inaliiico musical was given
by tho Duchess Lamottc, and among
tho guests wns tho charming bride
elect of President Cleveland, then in
Paris completing her trousseau. Tho
young lntly was the object ot ninny
marks of distinction, the high aristo
cracy surrounded Jior, and thero was
much tnlk of her position. Ono
lady, tho daughter-in-law of tho
Duchess do Pcrsigny, condoled witli
Miss Folsoin bocniibo she would have
no title as tho wife of a Republican
President. "All would bo well, only
you will havo no title," said she;
"you will only bo called Mrs. Clove
land." "But that nanio is only for
strangers," was tho answer of tho
fair American; "tho President lias
for intimacy conferred upon mo a
very particular title," Everybody
looked up curiously, and, blushing
deeply, Miss Folsotu added: "Ho
calls me his darling. Can a wifo
desiro a better titlo?" Tho hostess
embraced hcrauiiablo guest, remark
ing, "You are right, and you nppear
to mo as if you would keep the titlo
to tho end of your life." Pall
A NOVEL ELECTRIC LIGHT.
Electrical engineers have long
sought a method by which a satis
factory electric light might be pro
duced by means of a battery and
without the use of an engine and
dynamo, and which would at tho
same timo be practical. An excellent
light has been produced by tho
means of an ordinary battery ; but
the great difficulty has been found
in the well-known fact that in the
old style of battery the zinc encrusts
so rapidly by action of the potash
that without constant labor tho light
will fail. This djlllculty has recently
been solved in tho volta-pavla bat
tery, tho inventor of which has dis
covered that by tho uso of soda
instead of potash equally good re
sults are obtained so far as 'the
quality of tho light is concerned,
whllo no crystallization whatever
takes place. Tho result of the dis
covery is that tho light will retain
its brilliancy until tho ziuo shall bo
consumed by notion of the soda,
which will average a period of two
weeks. It has, therefore, been found
cntiroly fcasiblo to establish inde
pendent plants of elcctrio lights,
which is u desideratum in country
mansions, railway cars, steamships
and similar places. Doston Adver
