TIIAUE DEPRESSION IN GERMANY.
Much has been heard of lato about
the piospcrity of Gcnnnny; but it
seems not to bo commonly under
stood that oven Germany has at
length entered upon u pciiod of de
pi esslou. During the tell yent s end
ing with 1884 the imports dimin
ished by 388,000,000 inutks, while
the exports, the Bluest indication of
commercial prosnoiity, augmented
by tho large total of 8:10,500,000
innrks. During the decade the ex
poits of large metal goods more than
quintupled ; ironmongery, jewelry
and leather goods moie than tripled,
and machineiy ncarlj doubled.
During the last nine months, how
ever, there has been a scnsiblo fall
ing off in the volume of several of
tho great Teutonic industries. Tho
timber trade with Hussia and Fin
land has contracted so seiiotisly,
owing to tho fall in prices, that
several great timber llrms have been
compelled to suspend payment. The
competition of liussian and Polish
iclincd sugar has lilcowlso much dim
inished the consumption of German
sttgnr in Finland. Almost simul
taneously the Swedish bar-iiou trade
has practically ceased. By reason
of the lowncss of freight, 10,000
additional tons of coal were last
yoar landed at Lubcck, alone. The
pi ices of textiles have fallen con
siderably ; mid, although in this, as
in other branches of tindc, tlieic was
an increase in the .amount of busi
ness done, piices were so low as to
leave the very nairowest margin of
profit. It will be intctesting to ob
seive how Germany comes out of
her ihst peiiod of depression.
