COMICAL PREDICAMENT OF AN ELOP
Intelligence was received here to
day that a young lady nnd gentlc
mnn living near the Red Sulphur
Spiiugs, nnd whose names nre omit
ted on account of their families,
eloped from the house of the lady'u
parents for the purpose of getting
married. The Hying pair were in a
buggy nnd made good time until
Indian Creek was reached. The
creek was ery high, but an attempt
was made to ford it. When midway
iu tbe sticam tlieohicIe was washed
over and the occupants thrown into
the water. They lodged against a
broken tree in the middle of Ilia
creek. The young man caught the
lady as the rushing waters were
carrying her down and held her.
Fortunately just at the loot of tho
tree there was sulllcicut foothold for
the young man to stand, o tiiat the
water only came up to his arm-pits
but on cither side of him it was too
deep and the current too strong for
him to venture to reach tho shore.
He held the joung lady in his arms
for two hours before they were discovered-
The position was tnudc
more unpleasant by the sun pouring
its rays upon him. Fortunately,
when the buggy was ovei turned, an
umbrella was thrown in reach of the
young man and he managed to opeu
it and hold it oer the lady. JKocl
as was the catastiophe, the rchcue
was even more novel. A young
man, although the risk was great,
swam a strong horse to the place,
and the imperiled lady and gentle
man hung on to the animal's tail
and' were brought back safely. The
father caught up with the pair at
tho creek and the wedding will not
take place. Richmond, V.u, letter
to Baltimore Ameiican.
TORTURINC CHINESE PERJURERS TO
EXTORT THE TRUTH.
Having a rainy day to spare, I
hate spent part of it in a visit to
tho Government piison, writes a
Canton correspondent of the New
York Tribitne. The court was in
session not far away and we nked
in to sec how justice is administered
here. One man was being examin
ed by tho iMund.irin and four or fi-o
more wcte being toiturud. Tho
guide told us that "they no speak
truth-" We found that they were
witnesses with the truth of whose
testimony the Judge was not satis
fied. A little torture he thought
would extract the tiuth. This tor
ture was simple. A plank is placed
on end, anil at the top nnd bottom
two other pieces of wood are Listen
ed at right angles, making a frame
something like a carpenter's
"horse." The knees of the unhappy
perjurer arc first beaten to make
them tender; he is then placed in a
kneeling position with the arms
drawn straight behind him and kept
there by a string which is tied about
each thumb aud then drawn up taut,
?he string being suspended from the
slicks at the top of the plank.
f Other cords hold up his feet, being
fastened tightly to the great toes
and then di awn up so that the leg is
bent behind him and held in the air
the weight of .the body, of course,
coming partly on the tender knees
and partly on Jthe great toes. A
bole is made in the plank just be
hind his head, and thiough this the
cue is drawn and fastened to a little
windlass. This being slowly revolv
ed a not too pleasant result pf pull
ed hair is obtained. Fearful were
the ye)ls of one of those men ; if a
half hour of that would not bring
Hie truth nothing would. Tw o of
tho men were softly groaning, and
two others had faces like Stoics, and
not a murmur came from them,
Thoy evidently believed that n Ho
well stuck to was as good as thu
truth. The sight was not pleasant,
and wo came away with a great res
pect for the laws as administered in
China. This method of preventing
perjury I recommend to the notice
of our law-makers, for it is said to
bring about the required result if
kept up long enough. The only
flaw seems to be that the Mandaiin
alone has to be satisfied, and it is
just possible that bo might be mis
taken at times.
It seems a hard tiling that so
many dudes should be walking about
with nothing to do when the hand
organ man lias to pay 810 for a
monkey. Bultimoro American.
Never spread an ill report about
your neighbor until you know posi
tively that it Is true; and don't do
it then if he is n good ileal bigger
than you aro. Texas Slftings.
An elephant btory, iu which tho.
huge beaut is made to kill sixteen
persons, is going tho rounds. .AVlmte
