Mcelical circled in this city have
again been startled by the rciuaik
ablo operation of a bold surgeon,
says tlio Cincinnati Enquirer. It
consisted of laying open the chest,
cutting into the lung and removing
n foreign body; the patient lecover
ing. Abdominal surgery has be
come :ui every-day occurrence, but
this procedure has never before
been attempted. The chest cavity
with its contained oigans is a con
stant bugbear to the doctors. The
patient is a young lady of about
twenty, the daughter of an Kastern
stock-broker. When a child at play
slio was thoughtless enough to put
a colored-glass bottle in her mouth.
By some sudden motion or jar the
glass was broken and part oi it weni
into her wind-pipe. A violent lit of
coughing ensued and small bits were
cxpcctoiateel, but from the symp
toms manifested it was evident thnt
a pot lion of the glass still remained
in her throat. Severe hemorrhage
ensued tho next day, and was only
checked by the most energetic mea
sures. The bleeding occurred the
next day and the next, and each
timu threatening to terminate
At the end of a week the flow of
blood was stopped, and the child
showed signs of improvement. Its
appetite returned and its usual fond
ness for play was seen, yot nt times
in the midst of its frolics the little
one would stop, put her hand to her
chest and give evidence of tho most
terrible sulfcring. It was hoped the
child would outgrow the affection,
as it was believed its condition was
duo to disease of the lungs. At the
age of six years, however, the child
had an attack of spasmodic cough
ing, which lasted about ten minutes
and terminated in the expulsion of
several pieces of glass as largo as
the end of a lead pencil. At this
time she again nearly bled to death,
but this was averted, and she imme
diately grew better. Ilcr conva
lescence was rapid, and in a month's
time she was able to stait to school.
She made satisfactory progress in
her school work, and at last gra
duated, at the age of seventeen,
with high honors. One year later a
hacking cough appeared, accompa
nied by loss of flesh and strength,
impaired appetite, pallor and all the
accompaniments of early consump
tion. The doctor in attendance was
firm in his belief that this was the
malady bo rapidly carrying her to
tho grave, Medicines were given,
but without avail.
One day while the physician was
examining her a small red spot was
noticed ou the left side just below
the arm-pit. It was very tender on
pleasure, evutcntiy containing pus.
The idea at once struck the doctor
that.a piece of the glass swallowed
years before might have lodged in
this spot, and, after so long lcmain
ing quiet, had begun to make its
presence known. With the consent
of the young lady and her fiicnds
preparations were made for an ope
ration with the view of finding out
tho cause of her disease and, if pos
sible, letnodying it.
The patient was etherized at 10
o'clock in the morning. Forty-live
minutes later tho operation was
completed. After thoroughly cleans
ing tho pait with antiseptic solution,
the knife was inserted just beneath
the pit of the arm and drawn down
ward two inches. A large quantity
of offensive matter escaped. On
introducing tho linger into the
wound a cavity was found as large
as a small orange. This was lined
by a very tough adherent tissue.
At ono point could easily be felt the
sharp edgo of a piece of glass. It
was impossible to extract it through
the opening mode without endanger
ing the adjacent tissue. Conse
quently about one and a half inches
of the rib opposite was sawed off,
thus giving the surgeon a good view
and peunitting the manipulation of
instruments, The piece of glass
was attached so tightly that it had
to bo cut loose by curved scissors.
Little or no bleeding occurred, how
ever. After searching aronnd tho
cavity to bo sure that nothing moro
remained it was washed out with
antiseptic water. A rubber tube
was introduced to drain away the
discharge, and tho wound was closed
with silver wire, leaving tho cut rib
to take care of itself. During tho
operation tho patient's pulse was
stiong, except at the moment when
the glass was cut looso, at which
timo it grew rapid and weak, but
soon recovered its normal force.
Tho young lady sat up in two
weeks and in a month took a ride.
Her recovery was rapid and com
plete, her appetito returned, her
arms irrcw nlump, tho roses ap
peared on her cheeks, and the old,
shores beyond. The lady's name
is not given, though slio is well
known in society circles in this
