FRIDAY. APRIL 1. 1887.
Sylvester Shivcly, who died of
apoplexy at Scranton, in this State,
on Saturday, wns born in Wilkes
bane fifty years ago and wns a
college-bred iiinn. It is thought by
old gamblers in new York that he
has left nenily 8500,000. He won
his wife by a game of poker on the
Mississippi in the summer of 18G0.
It was on the River Queen and the
game had been going on for some
time, and tho stakes ran into the
thousands, for there was no limit in
those days. Ono of tliu playuis,
after dropping Ins last dollar, drew
his chair back from tlic table, and
going to the side of the boat whipped
out, his deringcr and put it to his
head. But he was not quick enough,
for Shivcly had him in his grasp be
fore he could (lie and he led the man
into the cabin. There the sti anger
introduced Shivcly to his daughter,
a beautiful girl of 20. They say it
was love at first sight. Shivcly res
tored the man's fortune lie had won,
married the daughter and promised
to give up gambling forever. He
settled down in Scr.mton and wns
living like a gentleman when ho was
called to llarrisbpig on business
dining a session of the Legislature.
Uc sat into a game there nnd won
62,000. Shivcly was a member of
tho famous "Bucktail." a Pennsyl
vania regiment that enlisted in
18G1. Philadelphia Record.
Chicago, .Feb. 20. The Time's
Lincoln, Neb., dispatch says: The
great damage to telegraph wires has
made the task of collecting the de
tails of the great storm in Colorado
and Western Nebraska very slow
and tedious. As the news comes in
it shows the disturbance was tho
worst in the histoiy of the legion
affected by it. The storm laged in
the mountains and descended upon
tho plains. These had been dry and
free of moisture so long that dust
and sand mingled with snow in re
sistless torrents. Neither man nor
beast could stand before the rush.
This compounded filled the shallow
cuts level full and effectually block
aded tho tracks. Fortunately the
cuts arc shallow, and the snow-plows
were able to clear them out.
As the trains came in to-day the
passengers and train-men saw cattle
in droves bui icel to their beads in
snow. As hardly a cow was to bo
seen elsewhere it is evident that
many arc entirely covered. Most
of those seen will perish. In fact,
all except a few that can be found
and dug out by the small force avail
able for that purpose, will bo lost.
The loss of cattle will be something
The storm covered the entire lange
on the cast side of thc'Rocky Moun
tains from tho lb itisli line to New
Mexico, and its eastern edgo lapped
into Nebraska to the North Platte
and McCook. Unless tho stories
arc exaggerated, not less than 25
per cent of all the catllo on the
range are wiped out. fS. F. Bulle
