HOTEL DEL MONTE TO HE RESTORED.
The beautiful gioiiuils of Iho
Hotel Del Monte nt Monterey will
not long remain without u 'hotel
building, which will bo one of their
tulornmonts. Major Uen. C. Tin
man slates that the woik of icinov
ing tlio debits from tho silo of the
burned hotel will be commenced nt
once, and that a new building will
be erected and mado ready for occu
pancy by September 1st. ' The new
Hotel Del Monte will cost $100,000
more than thai which was burned,
and will accommodate L'OO moio
guc3ts. Its general architectural
effect will be tho same. As the
plan of the first building was the rc
Hiilt of inspii ation, perhaps, more
than of design, it will piobably be
adhered to, as the beauty of the
original building was n source of
delight to all visitors at Monterey.
Although the new hotel will be
larger, it is not probable that it will
be higher, as an additional story
might detiact fiom its beauty. The
dining loom of the new house will
scat twice as many ns the old, and
there will be two elevators in the
building. An asphalt walk will be
laid between the hotol and the club
house, liko that of tho San Jose
In tho uicaiilimu the work on the
new hotel at Pacific (J rove will bo
jHished ahead, and it will bo opened
to guests May 1st. George Sclionc
wald, the manager of the Del
Monte, has been instructed to take
charge of the 1'acilic Giove Hotel,
which lias been christened Kl Car
melo, and to bo furnished in the
style of the Del Monte, llu will
conduct it on the same plan as the
Monteiey hotel. The Kl Carmelo
will accommodate 1.10 guests, and
will cost $70,000. Its guests will
have the use of the stables, club
house and baths of the Hotel del
Moute, which although now closed
will bo le-opcned as soon as the El
Caiiiiolo throws open its doors.

have sued tho American Sugar He
nnery to recover $1,380. The com
plaint states that the manager of the
relinery entered into a contract with
them to furnish plaintiffs witli all
the sugar they needed to supply
their cuslomeis in Oregon at the
samo price they could buy it from
the California Rolinery and to allow
them a re-bate of one-eighth of a
cent per pound. The' further al
lege that they oidered 1)70,000
pounds of sugar fiom tho defen
dants, and after keeping the order
for several days they informed the
plaintiffs that tiicy would not fill it.
In the mean time sugar went up
three-eighths of a cent and in sup
plying their custoiiieis plaintiff al
leges that they lost tho amount ask
