MONDAY MAY. 0 1887.
THE BLOOD OF ENGLAND.
Olndstonc having satd that thero
are "within tho compass of the
United Kingdom, no ieos than four
nationalities," John Lubbock in tho
London Times of March 10th, pro
ceeds to divide up the conntiy ac
cording to blood. As rcgaids South
Britain, he says, it will be gcncr.tlly
admitted that, omitting tho question
of pre-Celtic races, Wales nnd Corn
wall are predominantly Celtic; that
the south and east are predominantly
Saxon, with a considerable Norman
intermixture; that certain districts
arc mainly Scandinavian; that our
population is built up of three princi
pal elements Celtic, Saxon and
In Ireland, the population of the
cast and north is mainly Saxon ; in
tho northwest Celtic, while in the
extreme southwest the basis is
Iberian, akin to tho population in
parts of Spain. Very many of those
who imagine themselves to be Celts,
nnd the natural foes of the Scsscnnch,
arc descendants of English colonists,
even in Munstcr and Connaught.
Thcl'nrnclls, Grays, Moorcs, Burkes,
1' itzgcralds, JVIuMalions, Harrys,
Butlers, are Anglo-Norman.
To pass to North Biitain. Here
wo are met at once by tho curious
fact that the Saxons were in Cale
donia before the Scots. In fact the
Scots were an Irish tribe. Ireland,
bays Bcde, "was the original country
of the Scots." "Ibernia propria
Scotorumcst patria." "Scotia was
originally Ireland," said Bozius
"Scotia, quiu turn erat Ibernia."
The Scotch camo fiom Irclaud, says
Marianus, "Scotus, do Ibernia in
sula natus.'Mfreland, says Chalmers
in his great woik, was "known at
the end of the Third century as the
native country of the Scots, and in
after ages by the name of Scotland ;
this appellation was afterward trans
ferred from Ireland to Scotland" ;
nnd he asserts, as the result of all
his inquiries, that no permanent set
tlement of the Scotch in Caledonia
took place till toward tho close of
the Sixth century.
In fact, down to the Middle Ages,
if a person was called a Scot it was
meant that ho was born in Ireland.
Mrr Bonwick says, "the real Scotia
was Ireland, whose name got trans
ferred to North Britain," and Mr.
Taylor, in "Words and Places," re
marks that "the Scots, this con
cluding Irish &ept, which appears to
have actually colonized only a part
of Argyle, succeeded in bostowing
its name on the whole country."
Argyle is indeed the country of the
Gael or Irishman. In the north of
Scotland, the Orkneys, and Shct
lands, the population is mainly
Scandinavian, Sutherland being so
named as the southern portion of
their teiritory. In the east and
south the population is maiuly Saxon.
Edinburgh is a Saxon city, built by
Edwin, King of Northumbiia, and
called after him.
Of the great Scotch families, the
Ballots are named from Baillul or
Bciiol in Normandy, the Cnmerons
from Cambrounc, the Bruces from
Yoiksliire, the Stewarts from
Shropshire, the Ilamiltons from
Hamblelon in Buckinghamshire, the
Lindsays from Lindsay in Essex, tliu
Sinclnirs from St. Clair in Normandy,
the Comyns from St. Cotnincs in
Flanders. Sonic even of the High
land clans aro Teutonic. The Gor
dons, saysMacLaughlin, the Frasers,
the Chisholms, etc., arc without any
trace of a connection with tho Celts,
and qriginally without doubt of pure
Teutonic blood. So are the Macaul
ays, while the Maclaughlins, Ken
nedys, Mncdonalds and Munrpes
arc Irish, and tho Elliotts, Erasers,
Maxwells, Mathcsons and Keiths
"The great heroes of Scottish
history," snys Bonwick, "Bruce and
Wallace, were of English origin."
The Lothians says II time, were
"entirely peopled with Saxons."
Tims, then, in Scotland, as in
England, the east is mainly Teu
tonic, the west mainly Celtic. If
wo are to bo divided at till according
to blood, tho divisions would not bo
into England, Scotland, Ireland and
Wales. The main division in Great
Britain would not bo from east to
west, but from north to south ; the
Saxon division would include tho
greater portion of the east of Eng
land, the east of Irclaud and of
Scotland ; the Celtic division would
compriso most of tho west of Ireland
and west of Scotland, with Wales
and Cornwall ; the Scandinavian tho
north of Scotland, several maritimo
districts on the east, Westmoreland,
Cumberland nnd Pembroke, while
the extreme southwest of Ireland
would be Iberian. Indeed, so much
iutormlnglcd are tho diffotcnt races
that one of our highest authorities,
Dr. Bcddoo, after careful and pro
longed study, says: "AVItli respect
to tho distribution nnd commixture
of race elements In tho British Isles,
wo may safely asseit that not one of
them, whether Iberian, Gaelic,
Cymric, Saxon or Scandinavian, is
peculiar to, or absent from, or nny-
where predominant in any one of the
three kingdoms." IS. F. Bulletin.
The report that the President nnd
Mrs. Cleveland aro about to make a
trip to tho South is denied.
