THE MATRIMONIAL DECOY DUCKS OF
PARIS.
Some mouths ngo a couple of ad
venturesses were arrested for having
worked a matrimonial agency, which
was in icnlity an effective machi
nery for decoying men on the look
out for rioh wives. The dupes, after
having been relieved of a round sum
of money, were married to a sham
heiress, and then sent about their
business. The principals of the
agency were a bogus Baroness de
Morti'cf, alias De la Roehellc, and
her attendant cavalier, a swindler
named Lccourtois. These two suc
ceeded in quilting the country, and
the Paris Correctional Tribunal,
which has just disposed of the
matter, had accordingly to deal
with llio sham heiress and a Mdmo.
Leprout, both of whom. had been
conducting a tolerably prosperous
matrimonial business on (heir own
account after their principals had
left France for reasons known to tho
police. The dupe was introduced,
after having answered the questions,
to a good-looking young female of
presumable Anglo-American origin,
whose name, according to the police
lpporls, is Leal. The part of thu
maternal relative was generally
played by Aldtnu. Leprout, while
the man Lccourtois acted as the
paternal or avuncular protector of
the heiress. Mdlle. Leal, who was
the chief criminal arrested, said that
she had come to Poris from England
about three years ago, in order to
live with a man. She subsequently
accepted an offer to act as De Mor
ticr's decoy duck. Tho iirst wit
ness for thu prosecution who was
called was a shopman from Limoges,
M. Lofcvre. lie saw an advertise
ment that an English heiress, having
about i'GO,000 to her fortune, but
slightly damaged, was in tiic market.
Ho immediately rushed to Paris
with all the money ho could collect,
was introduced to the divine Leal,
spent nearly 200 in decorating that
peerless beauty with jewels and gold,
and went with her to London. He
passed a happy honeymoon in tho
British capital, visiting the Alliain
bra and other places of entertain
ment, and living with his bride and
her mother in the best hotels.
After that ho returned to Paris,
whither ho had summoned his friends
from Limoges, who soon informed
him of tho painful fact thot he had
been duped. M. l'Absoltt, a Pari
sian barber, paid i'C to be intro
duced to the daughter of a Spanish
general in her box at the opera.
The senorita, however, professed
(hat she found M. PAbsolu deficient
in educational attainments, so he
was left to tho tender mercies of a
Marseilles maiden, who llccced him
of 10. A stockbroker who had
been bamboozled mado a desperate
dash after the dowry which had
been promised to him. lie married
Leal in London, at a registrar's
ollicc, and entered at once into
financial matters. He soon found
put, however, t)iat after having
spent Ids money he had been fooled
to the lop of his bent. A country
gentleman fiom Tonrainu had not
only lost money on Leal, for whom
ho hired a box at tho opera, but
liad long kept her supplied with
game from his preserves. The trial
terminated by tiie condemnation of
Leal to our months' imprisonment.
Leprout was acquitted; while Le
courticr and the sham baroness were
condemned by default. Home

RUN DOWN BY INFERNAL DOGS.
After this wien nogs chase my
sheep, every one run down px licutpd
will bo disposed of without delay.
A number of years ago dogs killed
and scattered a Hock of Merinos,
and wc kept all Hint lived. It took
some of them two years to die, but
die they did, and as they pined so
long, 1 examined them and found
that they lived as long as they had
any lungs. Twp years ago Urn dogs
chased and bit a number of a opk
of coarse-wooled lambs. None
died, but sovcraj of them have not
done well since. They nro poor this
winter in spite of all wo could do,
and I am sure their lungs arc affect
ed, (he wime as the Merinos were.
They reaJy havo consumption, and
in time will dip pf this disease,
caused by over-hcatjng and con
gestion of tho Jungs at tho lime the
dogs chased thorn. They werp so
tired out that they did not eat for
several days, but lay quid in the
stable, whore they were taken when
found. The Merinos hid in the under
bush in the woods, and were thero
Ijirep days after being hunted down
by the. jlogs. Jt is ii folly to at
tempt to keep Gijccn under such
circumstances and get anything out
of them. As .soon as thoy have
cooled off thoy should bo slaught
ered. They will not gain in condi
tion, um food is wasted upon them.
