AM EPOCH IN HAWAIIAN HISTORY.
Thi! Sandwich Islnuds, which corn
pone tha kingdom of Hawaii, as
several popular books of tuivcl lmvu
lecctitly reminded the world, arc the
nearest approach to an earthly puia
cllse liniiginatlon can conceive. Uy
thu progtcss of whitu colonisation
they li'ive bCcmne n tiiniii station on
onu of the chief of human high
ways. A splendid empire is being
built from the foundations on the
one side. On the other, -the great
lepubllc 1ms inarched to the ocean
on its west. Hawaii !h gtown re
latively us well as absolutely a thing
of inatk. As a half-way house for
the United States and Australasia, it
would have been of inestimable value
to trade, had it been of inestimable
of barren t oeks. The completion of the
Canadian Tinuscontiumtal Knihvny
has tundetcd it n center of a fresh
line of tinllle. It's manifold oppor
tunities in o apparent to the trading
nations of the world, and they have
not escaped the attention of its own
rulers. King Ivalakntia is conscious
of the prosperity within roach of his
lealin, if only it possessed a sulll
cient population to reap the harvest.
His nativo subjects arc a handful,
and his territory would hold and
maintain many times the number.
Not without teason, ho believes tli.il
the human dual lb could be supplied
if Hawaii and its circumstances
were better ttndci stood, his own
journey, live years back, was of use,
as had been that of Queen Kmma
before it. But the effect of u royal
progiess dies out. lie has thought
thai the permanent need might be
met by tlio establishment of tegular
resident legations ; and there is little
doubt that Ills opinion is cotrcct.

A dispatch ft out San Francisco
announces that the famous old 1 lag
ship Hartfotd has been put out of
commission at the Maro Island Navy
Yard, and that tiiere is n prospect
of her remaining there to go to
decay. Jt is not strange that her
days of active service should be
over. She was built before the war,
and long ago ceased to bo of usu as
a war-ship. Hut in all the world to
day there is not another ship that
has bo much of historic intciesl.
L'arragut, then a Captain, took her
to the gulf in the winter of 1801-02,
and from that time until the close of
the war he identified his fortunes
with her. It was in her that ho
made the perilous passage up the
Mississippi, paslFojts Jackson and
St. rhilip, a feat up to that time un
cquuled in the naval history of the
world, and never equaled since ex
cept by the &amo noble commander
on thu same gallant ship. It was
with her and her consotls that lie
captuted the city of Nuvv Orleans
and held it until tlio military foiccs
arrived and took possession. In
her ho ran past Port Hudson and
Vicksburg, and finding the army
unable to co-operate, ran back again
to New Ot leans. In her he was
lashed to the rigging at the giand
battle of Mobile May. On her he
won promotion to tlio highest grade
then known in the navy, and C'ong
gtess, in loiognition of new deeds
of valor, created in succession, for
him alone, three new grades, until
as full Admiral he i cached tlio sum
mit, thu equal in rank of the highest
naval ollleeis of the world and "their
superior in everything else.
It was tlio achievements of the
Hat tford, under the dauntless leader
ship of Fanagut, that demonstrated
the uselcssuess of the old stylo of
forts, and revolutionised the system
of coast defenses. Never ship had
had such an honoiablc and brilliant
history.
It cannot be that Secretary Whit
ney will allow this grand old bhip to
bo dismantled and bioken. She
should be kept like "Old Ironsides"
as long as theie is anything left of
her to keep. And she should be
hi ought to Iter old home, at Now
Yotk, at once, before she is allowed
to go out of commission. To the
heatts of all pattiotic Americans she
should be as dear as Nelson's flag
ship, tho Vanguard, i3 to the English
man. She is worth more to the
nation for tho lessons she 1ms taught
and still teaches, than any. new and
costly ship of modern build can be,
Uring her home, Mr. Whitney.
