Out or 10,03a coke ovens In tho
Conncllsvllle region, 1,204 are idle.
A million-dollar company has just
been organized in Mew Orleans to
build several hundred coke ovens In
Alabama. ' Another million-dollar
company Is starting in Westmore
land county, Pennsylvania. A
dozen concerns luio completed ar
lnngcnients to build coke ovens,
some of them in the boutli, where
blast furnace production is seriously
hindcicd by the iiregttlsir nnd scant
supply. Tho Conncllsvillo region
shipped f2,000 cats during January
Minnesota lias two new labor laws.
One gives to labor the right of first

bids contractors for prison labor to
manufacture articles in competition
willi tliu custom work dono by niti

Tliu results of a year's cxpenmcnt
in profit-sharing in the Warducll
needle company's works in Lako
Village, 2S .)., arc reported by the
manager: "Last spiing we pro
mised our employes to share equally
with them whatever profits we might
cam dining tho rest of the year,
after paying a reasonable interest
on the stock. This was accepted by
them instead of the increased pay
which they had asked. The result
of tliu year's business lias been
highly satisfactory. After dividing
(J per cent to stockholders which
was about the average for the past
fifteen years there was a surplus,
one-half of which was apportioned
among tho help, nearly in propor
tion to the wages of each, and
amounted to about six per cent of
tiicir wages for the time being, and
was neatly one-third in the aggre
gate of the dividend to the stock
holders. It amounted to the same
as though they had owned about
S300 worth of the stock each on an
average. With onc-thiid less help
than for several pievious years, our
business has been more successful
in the past year than in any pre
vious year of our experience, and
we attiibutc this largely to the plan
of sharing the profits with the em
ployes. We shall continue this ar
rangement, as we are satisfied it is
the best for all.
Tho German imperial printing
olllcc at lieilin employs ninety-five
aitists and artists' assistants, and
the woikmen, apprentices, lads and
girls number 770. The amount of
work turned out thcic in the inter
est of the government is enormous.
The diffcient German and Prussian
government olllccs aboib in com
mon prints about 120,00,000 sheets,
tho post and telegraph, 13,000,000
sheets and C0,000,000 forms, cards,
etc. The number of notes, etc.,
from the thousand-mark note down
to the lowest-priced post stamp,
printed dining the last business
year at the Imperial olllce amounted
to 1,173,5G0,000, of tho value of
2,059,900,000 marks, which gives
an average of 7,700,000 marks per
diem. All tho people working in
the "value departments" have to
remain tho whole day on the pre
mises and to take their meals there,
for which purpose a kitchen has
been established, where they got
their food at reasonable prices.

THE SCIENCE OF NOSES.

infalliblo index to human character.
lie tells us in a book just published
that his discovery is the resijjt of a
long and patient thirty of this facial
organ among people of all nations.
According to his experience, tho
moral and physical nature of a person
crtn bo gathered fioni (ho formation
of Ilia nose. A wclj developed nose,
ho says, denotes 8tiongl)i tjiul coin
age; n little turn up noto indicates,
running and urtfulucFs; a delicate,
Htiait nose, fato and leiineiuont; u
cm veil nose, judgment upd egotism ;
and a thick, misshapen nose, ijulj
nchs and want of tact. Hut this is
not all. "Tho nose," piocecds our
phyMognomiHt, "discloses lo (ho jn
elligent obhuncis the faculties pos
tered by tho owner. It aloo indi
cates thu intensity of his intellectual
activity and the delicacy of his moral
sentiment. Finally, tho noe, which
belongs, both to tho mobile and im
mobile paits of our itngo, lolleiits
faithfully the fugitive movements of
our inclinations." If all this be tine,
it is oidont that people whodcsiio to
difrguiso their character or disbcinblo
their passions must in futuio bowaro
of their noses, or, lather, they must
wear fiilm ones. Fall Mall Gazette.
