FRIDAY MAY. 27 1887.
TATOOING EXTR ORDINARY.
A very funny story is being re
lated in Paris (says the Daily 'J'ek
graph) of an adventure that has
just befallen ' a young recruit at
Strasburg. As be was beiug ex
amined by the military surgeons ere
entering the ranks, it was found
that nearly the whole of bis body
was tatooed over with the words
"Vive la France." The startled
medicos twined and twisted the
youth about, and discovered that
"there was only one exception to the
inscriptions with whicli the Alsatian
had adorned himself, and this con
sisted of an equally brief sentence
expressive of the utmost contempt
for the Prussians. The individual
on whom the art of the tatoocr had
been thus lavishly practised has
been condemned, as n llrst instal
ment, to six mouths' imprisonment,
which will give him ample leisure
for reflecting on the egregious folly
of whicli he has been guilty. Hut
it Is to bo feared that when he at
length rejoins his regiment his
troubles will be by no means at an
end, unless, indeed, the military
authorities arrive at the conclusion
that a man who has deliberately
made such a ridiculous spectacle of
himself, and who has, moreover,
labelled himself with u treasonable
cry, is unworthy to don the Kaiser's
uniform. At any rate, the Alsatian
recruit has now become acquainted
with the fact if he was notnwaie
of it before that German ollleeis
aro the last people in the world with
whom it is prudent to trille ; and
that, if he intended his little exhibi
tion as a joke, it could not fail to be
utterly lost on those for whose
amusement it was destined. Worst
of all, the maiks can never he obli
terated, as wiser, if not sadder,
men' have, after indulging in their
youth in this .stupid practise, learnt
to their cost.
A SURVIVOR OF SEVENTY-TWO
MON-
ARCHS.
(erinau papers call to mind that
Kaiser AVilhelm in m ninety years
has survived no fewer than seventy
two reigning sovereigns who were
his contemporaries, viz.: ilfty-two
Kings or Queens, eight Kniperorn,
six (sultans and six Popes. Of tlieso
three were Kings of Prussia, Frede
rick William II, Frederick William
III, Frederick William IV ; two were
Kings of Hanover, two Kings of
Wurtcnburg, four Kings of Bavaria,
three Kings of Saxony, one King of
Westphalia (Jerome Bonaparte), one
King of Greece, one King of the
Belgians,,, three Kings of Holland,
three Kings of England, three Kings
of France, ilvo Kings of Sweden,
four Kings of Denmark, three (or
four) sovereigns of Portugal, five
sovereigns of Spain, live Kings of
Sardinia, six Kings of Naples, two
Emperors' of Austria (one of whom
was the last of the former line of
German Emperors), two Emperors
of Fiance, four Czars of Russia.
He has also survived twenty-two
Presidents of the United States.
A SIGNIFICANT UTTERANCE.
"Straws show which way the
wind blows," and that the wind is
blowing in the direction of the
levying of all taxes on real eslato
cannot longer be gainsaid. Much
as wc deplore this fa'tate of things,
we cannot ignore the facts without
doing violence to our own convic
tions. It appears that all classes of
the pommunity arc more or less im
bued with thp bcljcf that this offers
tho only solution of fi difllcult prob
lem. The labor agitators headed by
Henry Gcorgu and seconded by
Colonel IngerBoll, aro committed to
this principle in one form or another.
Some of our best writers and deep
est thinkers, as well as many of our
most practical moit arc unqualifiedly
in favor of it.
It is universally admitted that tho
bchcme is practicable. It cannot bo
denied that all other schemes arc
in a greater or lesser degree imprac
ticable. When men of reputed high
character and unquestioned integri
ty aro willing to stoop to the adop
tion of illegal means to secure their
escape from (ho payment of taxes
on their personal property, it must
be admitted that there is little hope
of securing any considerable propor
tion of the income necessary for the
nupport of the government from per
sonal property. In view of all the
facts wo are impelled, therefore, to
prophesy that this result rpajjy may
be reached. N. Y. Real Estate
