New .York, April '21. The Sun's
special of April 23d says: George
W. Pullman arrived here this morn
ing wltu his tiatu of vestibule cars,
and this af let noon he took a party
of New England railroad men on a
trial trip to Putnam, Conn. On thu
way back Charles Francis Adams,
President of the Union Pncitle Com
pany, stated that the train is tho re
sult of correspondence begun two
years ago between himself and Pull
man. Adams suggested that the estab
lishment of a great transcontinental
train to bo known as the "Asiatio
Limited" should supply the Ameri
can link in a through line from
Kurope to Asia. lie proposed to
sell coupon tickets in Paris and Lon
don for Tokio, Yokohama, Hongkong
and Canton. Passengers will be
obliged to make only two changes of
conveyance between Liverpool or
Havre and their Asiatic destination.
Pullman has fulfilled his part of the
bargain, and the plan in full is nbout
to be carried out. Passengers be
fore leaving Europe will have state
rooms and sleeping-car sections as
signed for the entire trip.
A transatlantic steamer will land
the traveler on the Jersey City
ylinrf within tciryauls of the train,
which will take him in just one
hundred hours to the gang-plank of
a Pacific Mail steamship in Han
Francisco, and his journey will be
continued to his destination. The
stops in Jersey City and .San Fian
cico will be as brief as the tapid
handling of baggage and mails can
make them. The tup from London
to Yokohama or Canton can thus be
made inside of ono month. It has
not been decided whether the
"Asiatio Limited" will run weekly
or fortnightly. Adams says that
within a few months it will be in
operation and moving as mnoothly
as the arrangements for an ordinary
journey of one-tenth the distance.

FLOWER-RAISING FOR PERFUMERY IN
CALIFORNIA.
i'lower-raising is an extensive in
dustry in .Southern Fiance, acres
upon acies of tuberoses, gcianiums,
orange-blossoms, jasmine, ioscs and
other specimens of Flora's rcaftn,
please the eye with their beauties
and steep the senses in their deli
cious fragrance. Beneath the orange
and lemon trees grow odorous masses
of violets, which requite but little
cultivation, and biing, it is said, au
average of 5 cents per pound. Aca
cia trees, with their honey-dripping
blossoms, line the roadsides, and the
orange orchards of Nice and Cannes
arc as cxtcusive as the cornfields of
Illinois and Indiana. At Nice alone,
the daily sale of orange blossoms
during the harvest of these tlowcrs,
which lasts about five weeks, is es
timated at from "eighteen to twenty
tons, while the violet crop raised on
the same ground amounts to 28,000
tons each season. The gathering of
these lovely harvests gives employ
ment to hundreds oi women and
childien, as tho flowers for perfume
must bo picked by hand so as not
to be bruised, l'erfume-makcrs of
tho large cities often buy the whole
crops of (lowers standing and send
agents to attend to tho hai vesting.
Years ago it was estimated that this
one branch of French industry alone
amounted to S1C,000,000 annually.
There is no reason why Amet ica,
with its grent variety of oil and
climate, should not avail itself of
the benefits of this industry, espe
cially in the southern counties of
California. And even in the northern
counties it could be prosecuted with
great profit. Hoses, violets, helio
tropes, lilies of all kinds, mignonette,
mock oinnge, honey locust, verbe
nas, lilacs, bcrgamot, rosemary and
many other plants used in perfume
making could easily be giown. And
tho fields of white clover, the masses
of wild eglantine, the fragrant Jindpii
trees, tho odorous arbutus blooms
and water-lilies, the spicy laurel, all
of which glow wild, without the aid
of human culture, need but gather
ing to bo made a source of profit as
well as beauty. Tho possibilities of
flower culture in tho southern part
of that Stale can jjnrdly be over
estimated. The inott liot'ous imagi
nation can scarcely pictuic the leali
ties of tho natuini flower gardens of
California, whore plants which hero,
witii the most careful cultivation,
mo only modest shrubs, grow to tall
tiees, adorned with their coronals of
beauty and fragrance. All the rare
beauties of the llor.il kingdom, which
in the Not ill aro brought Into bloom
by the most painstaking process in
gicen-houscs and conservatoiies, not
only throng the gardens there, but
ruii in wild luxniianco over unculti
vated fields and hillsides. Chicago
