FRIDAY JUKE, 3 1887.
SCIENTIFIC HOAXES.
Tito great lesson which Culver
tauirlil the world was, that many
mccs ot animals vvero entirely ex
tinct, and that Nature's chain of
existence had not one, but many
missing links. Ft out his recognition
of Unit fact the science of tuihconto
logy may be said, to date, llut the
enrniveious untitle of the mastodon
was too fascinating an absttulity to
be so easily killed, and it continued
to appear at intervals. As late as
IR.Ifi wu flml a New England medi
cal professor wilting as if it were
an unquestionable fact. The giant
theory lingered still longer, and
even 'yet cannot bu considered en
tirely 'extinct among tho unlearned.
The dictum that the superstitions
nf nun ntru are but tho science of
picceding ages, receives ample con
llnnalion in tho history of this sub
ject. Not longer ago than 181Ca
mastodon skeleton was exhibited in
New Oilcans as that of a giant. The
cranium was mado of rawhide, fan
tastic wooden tcctlt ueio lilted in
the Jaws, till missing parts were
restored after tho human model, and
the whole raised upon the hind Icgn.
It certainly conveyed lite notion of
"a hideous, diabolical giant," and
was no doubt responsible for many
nightmares. As a sad commentary
on the slate of the mcdiojil4rofe--sion
in the Southivost at .hat tjtnc,
it may be added that the exhibitor
was perfectly honest in the belief,
and to mipport his faith ho had a
trunk full of physicians' cettilieatcs
that these wcro human bones.
In 1810 "Dr." Koch, a German
charlatan, cieated a great sensation
by announcing tho discovery of the
leviathan of Job, which lie called
the Missouriuin, front tho State
where it was found. It turned out,
however, to bo nothing but a
mastodon preposloiously mounted.
Koch had added an extia dozen or
more joints to tho back-bone and
ribs to the chest, turned tho tttsks
outward into a bcmi-circle, and con
vex ted tho animal into an aquatic
monster which anchoicd itself to
tices by means of its sickle-shaped
tusks and tlinn peacefully slumbered
on tho bosom of the waves. Like
the Sibciians, he found inteicsting
continuations of his views in the
book of Job, that lofugc ot per
plexed monster-makers. Koch took
his leviathan to London, where it
was pin chased by tho British Mu
seum, and reconverted into a mas
todon by Prof. Owen, who at ouco
lecoguigcd its tine nature. Fiof.
W. 11. .Scott, in iSciibuor's Magazine
for April.
The Philadelphia Jiccnrd satis
factorily explains the cause of tho
defeat of tho Italians in their con
flict with the Abyssinians. It says :
"Had (ho Italians who 'carried the
war into Afiica' wielded the deadly
hand-organ, instead of lilies, the
Arabs would have knuckled under
at once."
