COHSPIR.CKS ACAIKST LINCOLN.
HOW HIS L1FK WAS BOCOUT AND
There were, fiora first to last, no
less Ulan n dozen orgnnized con
spiracies to take the life ot Alirnlmm
Lincoln, ami nearly 'all of Ilu-m
were planned in the shadow of the
"Wlilto House. After the great and
good man ctimo to rcallzo that his
life was menaced in this fashion, ho
surrounded himself with proper pro
tection, but nothing was moro bitter
to him than tho feeling that lie was
obliged to do this. I heard him say
once to Col. Baker, then at the head
of tho Sweet Service Bureau :
"These would-be assassins must
must be very icuornut people, or
else they nro insane. They don't
seem to realize that the war would
no on just'the same if tho President
and the Cabinet were wiped out.
"Would wo bo foolish enough to sup
poso that tho death of Joffcrson
Davis would end the Souhthern
Confederacy, or that the rebels in
tho field would fight with less
For one year from Juno, 18C2,
to June, 18G3 I was detailed on
nothing but conspiracies against tho
President, and in the time I dis
covered and frustrated three plots.
I do noj; mean to take tho credit of
having saved his life on these three
occasions, for only one of the plots
Blight have come to a head. Tho
first plan was lo send nn infernal
machine to him, and there were three
occasions, for only one of tho plots
might have como to a head. The
first plan was to send an infernal
machine to him, and there were
three men in it. "We got the machine
an hour after it was taken to the
Postolllco at Cinciimtti. The second
was a plot to abduct him, and that
was blocked by having a guard de
tailed to patrol the "White House
giounds. The third began and ended
with the incendiary fire which con
sumed the White House stables.
Tho Presidential coachman was a
man named Burke a faithful and
courageous man, and known to be
thoroughly loyal. "While in the very
best of health he was suddenly
taken strangely ill, and no doubt
poison of some sort was administered
to him. He was obliged to resign
his position temporal ily, and it was
filled by a man from Baltimore, who
was highly recommended to the
President, but of whom our Buieau
could learn little or nothing, and
that not in his favor. For three or
four weeks I did nothing but shadow
the man and nolo his every move.
On two occasions I found btrangc
and suspicious men with him at
night, and a search of his loom
during his absence brought to light
a letter couched in ambiguous teims
and dealing with mysteiious allu
sions to "live stock now about fat
enough to kill." On that evening
the Baltimorean got drunk, and that
was made an excuse to discharge
him, but soon after he lctuined and
sot firo to tho stables. Ho was seen
about tho stables, ho was heard to
mutter tin cats, ho was seen at the
very spot where the flames broke
out not five minutes before they ap
peared. I arrested him two hours
after the fire, and' when the matter
came into court he had nine wit
nesses to swear to an alibi. It was
supposed that ho intended tho con
flagration to draw Mr. Lincoln out
to the stables, which it really did,
and then he was to find opportunity
to stab or shoot him, but as 60ou as
tho firo blazed up and tho alarm was
raised the fellow's nerve failed him
and he ran away. When I took him
into custody ho exclaimed:
"I didn't do it, and I can prove I
Ho had a wicked-looking knife
and a single-barreled pistol on him
and some written instructions as to
how to find a certain mysterious
party in New York city. Wo couldn't
convict him, but ho found it best to
leavo Washington at once, and to
remain away until after tho war.

THE LARCE FEE OF A LONDON
Physicians' fees aro sometimes
nearly equal to Iocs of tho leading
members of tho bar ; sometimes they
aro a little over. For instance a
distinguished physician was offered
500 guineas to pay a visit to a sick
person who was residing a fair dis
tance off on the Continent. Tho
doctor declined; moro offcis tempt
ing him weio consecutively made
until the bid was 5,000. This sum
was also declined. But ho was
shortly after compelled to attend
some on elsu who was residing near
this tempting would-be patient, and
ho took tho oppoilunity of looking
in en route.
Tho phyBioian was offorcd 5,000
on leaving, but would not consent to
receive moro than i'500. A few
days after his return to London ho
found that -1,500 had been placed
to Jiia cicdit at his banker's. This
sum ho immediately forwarded to a
chaiitablo institution, informing tho
grateful and large-paying patient of
what ho had done, which enthely
met witli approval.
Tho physician's iiamo will not bo
difficult to search out, for three steps
through the alphabet will bring one
to tho right letter; tho remaining
ones can easily bo filled in by those,
who know tho kind-hcaitcd man.
