OMOINWL COPY OP " IIOMC, SWEET

Nrw York, May 1C A special
to the W'iiiiI Ir.im Atlanta. Gu..
say-: MibM Maty Il.inliii, flaniie
ot John llouuul l'ayuc, and the
lady for whom he wrote his "Home,
Sweet Home," died in Athens last
night, nnd was buried to-day. It
is said that tho original copy of
"Homo, Sweet Home," was buried
with her, as it was interlined with
lovo declarations from Payne which
tho lndy did not wish to have fall
under tho eye of tho piiCltc. She
had been offered largo sums for the
manuscript, but always declined to
part with it.
Miss Hardin passed her seventy
eighth year on her last birthday.
When General liardiu died it was
found that his estate was involved
and much of his property swept
away. His daughter went bravely
to work and by her ability to trans
late French she made n living. She
did much woik of this soit for a
laige business house, and in trans
lating diplomatic papers.
The French Legation in Washing
ton used to keep her constantly em
ployed. The house in which she
died was one of the pieces of her
father's estate reclaimed by her in
domitable capacity for wmk. She
accumulated a competency which
sustained her through life, and she
leaves about 825,000. fS. F.
rnosi'ECT EOlt a duel iietwkes
riOHTlKO NEW OULEANS JOOIt
KAI.IST3. Chicago, April 2C The Inter
Octun'a New Oilcans special says:
The community is excited over a
war between the JUvcniiitf Slates and
Picayune, which lias degeneiatcd
into an abuse of individuals nnd
threatens to culminate in ' a duel
under tho code, if not a street fight.
Last week, after the institution by
tho Attorney-General of suits against
tho Cotton Oil Trust Company, the
Picayune, iu an editorial, handled
the Trust Company very roughly.
Tho next day, however, tho same
paper contained an editorial defend
ing the Oil Trust Company, and in
timated that the Attoincy-Gcncral
was the tool of stock jobbers.
The Stales called attention to the
diffcicncc between tho two articles
and tho war began. Yesterday the
Picayune had a personal attack on
II. J. Hcarsey and George W. Dup
rcc, editors and proprietors of the
Slates, and J. Pinckncy Smith, the
manager. They were charged with
being "pap suckers," and with hav
ing changed from "reformers to sup
porters and henchmen of a corrupt
political ling." This evening the
States denounces II. C. Parker,
editor of tho Picayune and at one
time a San Francisco journalist, as
a hired bully, assassiu, coward, -etc.
Ilearsoy, Dupreo and Parker, have
cacli been on the Held of honor as
principals. Parker, it will be re
membered, was in a duel in which
ho severely wounded Maj. Burke.
The present affair is expected to
have a bloody termination.
A CANADIAN NATIONAL PARK.
Following the good cxaraplo of
their American cousins, tho Cana
dians have resolved to exempt a
considerable section of their terri
tory from purchase. The land in
question is a region rich in the pic
turesque, ind is situated at Banff,
on the lino of tho Canadian Pacific
Hallway. Like its neighbor, tho
Yellowstone, this new national park
contains hot sulphur-springs which
havo already attracted many iu
'vallds. Marvellous talcs aro told
of people who havo been taken to
theso springs in a dying state, but
who havo recovered under tho in
fluence of tho'ficsh mountain air,
aided by tho sulphurous baths, in a
short space of time. Besides its
sanitary reputation, Banff will
speedily become a holiday resort, for
tho summer season it is as delight
ful as the most exacting would wish.
Tho proposal to establish this na
tional park is duo to Mr. Sandfoid
Fleming, the able engineer of the
Pacific Railroad. He, indeed, sug
gested the formation of two such
pleasure grounds, and it seems al
most a pity that the Canadian Gov
ernment did not agree witli his
views. Even now tiio park at
Banff, which is, perhaps, sufllcicntly
largo, might havo been indefinitely
increased. Theso charming regions
should bo kept out of the clutches
of speculators, who havo long sinco,
all over tho world, discovered that
scenery is a paying commodity.
In the Canadian Commons, Juno
1st, Sir Charles Tuppor, in reply to
a question, said that both tho Im
perial Government and the Govern
ment of Canada were doing nil in
their power to promoto n friendly
adjustment of tho fisheries difllculty
and to nrrango a reciprocity treaty
with tho United States, but that it
would not bo in tho interest of the
public service to communicate any
thing more definite than that to tho
