Peking. Startling, at the st.iiemcnt
niiglil set'tii, the lacls aihluectl by
the nuthor of it siom lo show that a
railroad loutc to China from Paris
through Asia is perfectly feasible.
From Paris to Ekaterinenberg, on
the Sibetian frontier, is only 4,100
kilometers j and thero Is a depres
sion in the chain of tho Ural there
to a height of only 3o0 meters abovo
the sea level. Over this depression
the road could easily be carried Into
the Siberian plain, nnd thence by
Omsk, Tomsk, Krasnoyarsk and
Khallar to the Mongolian frontier,
whence it could be canicd south
wardly to Peking. Fmin Kkatcr
inenberg, on the Urnl line to Peking
is 5,800 kilometer.-. The total dis
tance from Paris lo Peking is, there
fore, reckoned at about 9,900 kilo
meters an easy journey of twelve
days by rail. After all the railroad
would not be a much more ditllcult
undertaking than our own lines
across the United States fioin necan
to ocean, and would be exposed to
not much worse strains of weather
and snow than what the Noi thorn
Pacific occasionally suffers. Cross
ing tho Mongolian Deseit would be
tho worst part of the journey; but
then there are oilier ways of cai ty
ing the road into China from Hus
sion railroad centers, or from a
Chinese center to Russian territory.
Shanghai could be connected with a
Russian line by the city of Singnu,
chief northwestern city of China;
and the lino could be thence carried
to the Cliamul Oasis and beyond
into Kashgar and Yaikand, or to
The English have been most an
xious to secure direct communica
tion between Europe and India, and
it is not impiobablc that some of
these uroiecls will bo lcalizert. A
laiiroad, like that advocated by
Cameron from Tripoli, in Northern
Africa,, lo Bushir, on the Persian
Gulf, would do much for Anglo
Oriental commerce the maritime
Journey from Bushir to Bombay
being very short. Puissia has the
geojiiaphieal advantage in regard to
possible direct communication with
China, and the commercial advan
tages of a line reaching Iho heait of
that empire, to connect with a possi
ble future system of Chiuesc roads,
cannot be ovei looked. There may,
however, be excellent strategic or
political reasons for leaving it uii
constructed till other questions are
satisfactorily settled. England, on
tho other hand, could reach China
tbiough Brumah and tap the com
mercial centers of all the farther
Orient. There nro great difllculties
in tho way ; but sonic closer connec
tion with China would become im
perative should Bussia lake the first
great step in a tiansasiatic railioad
Whatever bo the futuio result of
the ill-feeling between tlte two great
European nations regarding Oriental
preponderance, it is likely that both
these projects, or others closely
similar, will be eventually canicd
out, and that Asia will bo yet as
well intei linked with Europe us our

Sfaith America is to bend her lines

Ameiican republics, making an iron

extreme south of tho habitable

WOMEN CLERKS IN WASHINGTON.
Women clciks arc disappearing
from the departments in Washing

a woman will bo a rare sight in a de

arc being got rid of undpr tho Civil

tho Treasury corridors or standing
at tho windows at noon-time with
their cups of tea. It is not that they

When n female cleik dies or gets

requisition goes ta tho Civil Service
Commission for a man lo 11 1 1 tho

was if it was tiuo that women did
not make as good clciks as men.
Tho reply was that some of them
made bettor clciks than did the
men. Tho trouble did not lie in
t lint. The fact is they aro hard to
deal with. Most of them depend
upon tlio gallantry of tho supeiior
officers nnd aro constantly nsking

or even seeming to think it impro

examining them for promotion.
Some havo not hesitated to ask lie
