T. It. Whcelock is nn Kiiglishtnnn
who for twenty years has made
Shanghai his residence, and who
tukes the deepest interest in com
merce between tlio shores of tlio
United States and those of the Celes
tial Empire. lie lias on many oc
casions visited his native land, and
almost invariably has chosen to cross
the two oceans nnd this continent in
order to reach his home. Heating
that he was at the Palace Hotel,
and knowing Hint lie was interested
in the affairs of the Canadian Paci
fic Railroad, a Cluoniclo reporter
interviewed him Friday and culled
tlio following fads in the courso of
a half-hour's chat relative to that
railroad company nnd its new lino of
ocean steamers just established be
tween Hongkong and Vancouver.
"When docs tho Canadian Paci
fic Railroad Company propose run
ning its steamship line?" asked the
'The first steamer will leave
Yokohama on the 20th of this month
that is on Sunday."
"How many steamers arc thcie?"
"Thcro aro three," said Mr.
Whcelock, "the Abyssinia, the Par
thia and the Batavin."
"These names sound very fami
liar; in fact, they arc tho names of
thrco Cunardcrs," letnarked the re
porter. "That is so. These Unco steam
ers formerly belonged to the Cunard
line of Royal Mull steamers, nnd
were sold by it, or rather handed
over to John Elder & Co., the great
Clyde shipbuilders, in pait payment
for the company's two splendid
ships, the Umbna and thcEtruria."
"Have they, then, been chartered
by the Canadian Pacific Railroad
Company?" was the next question.
"Well, that is a moot point,
whether they belong to William
Picice, the head of tho firm of El
der & Co., whether he is simply
running them to suit tho require
ments o( such a line, or whether he
lias leased them, I cannot positively
state. They havo, however, been
altered considerably, and will bo the
finest now on the Pacific ocean. The
Abyssinia and the Parthia havo had
now triple expansion engines put
in, wliich has, of ppurse increased
their speed very much. The Bala
via is a fast boat as she is, nnd then
nil the internal fittings aro new, so
that they ato the acme of comfort as
well as speed. All the work was
done by John Elder of Glasgow."
.MAKING QUICK TIMII.
''Presumably the steamers will
now inn rcgulaily, will they not?"
"Certainly they will, The route
will be Hongkong, Kobe, Yokohama
"What time will the tiip take,
and how wil it compare with that
of the Pacific Mail Steamship Com
pany?" "The Canadian Pacific Railroad
Steamship Company estimates that
with these fast stcameis it will make
the trip in nineteen days. Now tho
Gaelic, in which I came," continued
the gentleman fiom Shanghai, "took
four and a half days from Hongkong
to Yokohama and sixteen days
seventeen hours from thcro to San
Francisco, making over twenty-one
days in all, which is a longer tiip
than the one to Vancouver."
"Will the line be popular, do you
"Without a doubt," was tho de
cided answer. "The Abyssinia left
Sydney on April ICth with a caigo
of coal and proceeded to Shanghai
and thence to Hongkong, and beforo
she was in sight of Shanghai every
cabin beith was booked, hcforo'l
left Shanghai every berth in the Par
thia was also booked, and she will
only sail on tho 30lh of June."
cihnksi: you Canada.
"Do you think tho Chinese will
avail themsehes of the new line?"
'That," nnswprcd Mr. Whcelock,
"depends upon tho action of tho
Canadians towaid tho Chinese At
present they don't seom to havo
made up their minds for rcstiietion
yet. Possibly tho Canadian Pacific
will run a lino of steamers down to
Sun Francisco; it will only tako
tin ec or four days, and time is no
question with tho Chinese. The
new lino will biing thoni ucioss $0
cheaper, and that is all tho Chinese
"Apart from a probablo Chineso
accretion, Vancouver will benefit by
this new line of stoamora, wjll it
"Doubtless it will. Theio never
has been an oceanic lino of steamers
from theio befoie. Now, instead of
clipper Bhips, laden with tea from
China and Japan, it will nil come by
steamer, nnd tho Canadian Pacific
it imk line will help to whiil tho tea
across in no time to London, Tho
bulk of the cargo of theso vessels
from Hongkong and Yokohama, I
suppose, will bo principally lea, and
the return journoy will in timo
doubtless cany Canadians products.
Vancouver will become a lnrgo pott
a regular Liverpool of the North."
AN ANCIIlY SAXON.
"Now let mo ask you a question
or two about cabin passengers, busi
ness men and thoso who aio anxious
to mako quick timo."
"Well, I think tho Paciflo Mail
Steamship Company will find that it
has n strohg competitor, not because
the comforts and accommodation of
the older line aie not of the best,
but because the customs officials
treat a man so badly."
Then Mr. Whcelock, who is an
Englishman, indulged in a little
tiradu against the wretched accom
modations for the reception of liav
clcis. "They make you open your bag
gage yourself, not liko in other
potts, wheic you have a porter to do
it," he continued. "Then they
throw a fellow's things about in the
dirt of a dirty dock-shed lloor. The
wind whistles thiough the open
gates and a fellow has to scramble
about on his knees almost, gather
ing up his belongings and stowing
them back in his tinnks. They
make you declare what you have,
and I think It is outiagcous. They
turn round and search your things
as though you had lied to them.
They haul cvciy bit of thing out and
chnrge you for it. It is outrageous.
I'll novcr pass thiough this port
again. 1 would rather go round the
After Mr. Whcelock had recover
ed from his indignation at his recep
tion hero by customs officials he
was questioned as to preparations
for the new line of steamers at its
termini and ports of call. K
wiuitvns and wAiti:iiousr.3.
"What preparations have been
made at Hongkong for tho bciths of
the steamers and tho carrying of tho
mails, etc. ?'
"Tlio steamers will be beithed
nlongsido the new wharves of the
Kow Loong "Wharf Company. These
wharves arc great improvement on
the old ones, and the present owners
li:we amalgamated their interests
with those of Matliison, Jnrdino &
Co. Hongkong will be considered
the starting point of the line and the
mails from Shanghai will be carticd
by the Nippon Gqscu Kiashia Com
pany to Hongkong. Yokohama w ill
merely bo a poit of call. It has no
whaivc3 to speak of. Vancouver
will doubtless have large w alehouses
and good wharves built as occasion
domands. Tickets through to Lou"
don f i om Hongkong can be had at
considerably cheaper lates via Van
couver nnd the Canadian Pacific line
than via San Francisco."
"Aro there any grounds for be
lieving that tho British Government
has subsidized the company?"
"I think thoro is little to doubt it,
as the British Government is very
libcial in that lcspcct and has often
done it before. 1 ha e no idea of
the amount, but befoie 1 left it was
a matter of common conversation."
At this juncturo a young girl
came up, and, claiming Mr. Whec
lock as her father, cairicd him off
to see the fire patiol diill. Mr.
Whcelock left for tho East w ith his
family yesterday afternoon.
