A SCENE Iti PARIS.
A flceno worthy of a pantomime
was witnessed the other day in Paris
on the Boulevard dtt Temple. A
curious looking individual, with long
hair nud a generally unkempt np
pearanco, bestrode a wine barrel and
called aloud that he was "Bacchus,"
and that ho had splendid wlno at a
penny a glass. People crowded
around him, and his customers be
came numerous whru it was dis
covered that he was selling excellent
Burgundy at a cheap rate. In the
Height of Ins business operations a
robust-looking man ran up and
knocked "Bacchus" off his barrel.
The demonstrative new-comer wa9
the owner of the piece, which, it ap
pears, had been lying outside his
door, when "Bacchus" passed by
and rolled it away stealthily. The
thief alleged to the police that ho
had acted in the interests of Social
ism, and that his object was to sup
ply the peoplo with good wine at a
low price. Tlio philanthropist was
nevertheless ignominiously locked
up. Home News.
A company has been formed nt
Pittsburg, with a capital of $100,
000, to manufacture brick from
blnst-furnauc cinders. The indus
try is successful in England, and
the projectors count on turning out
30,000 bricks a day, and believe
that they will be sold for 8-J per 1,-
UUO.
Glass-making is said to be Pitts
burg's oldest industry, and the an
nual product of its glass factories is
placed at S 10,000,000 in value.
The natural gas is peculiarly well
adapted for this work, and the glass
produced is superior in every res
pect to that manufactured in the old
way.
A great life insurance boom is now
traveling through the country. The
experience of the companies during
the past few years has convinced the
managers that it only requires ener
gy and push on the pait of agents
to iticrease their business to a very
great extent, while the machinery
they already have for handling it
can take care of a very great inci ease
without materially adding to their
expense account.
