AH ESSAY ON PRACTICABILITY
OF PROHIBITION.
CONIINUHD.
I'AHT III.
Having pointed out the orrors of
our brothers, the prohibitionists in
their course, having also shown the
dangerous effects of alcoholic drink
upon the physical as well as moral
welfare of the community, wo must
conic to the conclusion that we
would be bolter off without it.
This great and vital question of
temperance is very much akin
to tho Chinese question, only tho
latter is of a more recent date.
For ages, yes, ever since tho crea
tion of the world, the pcoplo of al
most all nationalities and cllmcJ
have been using il. Inch by inch,
foot by foot, and stop by step this
hurtful indulgence lias advanced,
and as it has spread, tho evil and
danger has multiplied in proportion.
Yet wo have sat almost indifferently
viewing this pel nicious habit grow
ing upon us, till now, after we havo
our eyes opened, and this evil is
brought right home to every ono of
us, wo say let us stop it.
Friends, I think, wc have waited
too long. If wo consider the enor
mous proportions this liquor tralllo
has assumed, the vast capital invest
ed in it, millions upon millions of
people depending upon its sale, and
both church and state largely sup
ported by it, wc must not be sur
prised to find that all peremptory
laws, all sumptuary legislations arc
complete failtucs. They are mainly
so, because, attacking personal
libcity.
The plan of modern temperance
societies is chiefly to slop diink, to
cut off that which the majority de
mands. 1 firmly believe that if this
older was reversed, and wo would
try and cut off the demand first
rather thau the supply, we would be
more successful.
Cut off the demand, tho supply
must cease. Let ever' man in good
health abstain totally, and let every
individual mother pi each it, not
from the pulpit nor from the plat
form of the lecture room, but at
HOME !
Ours is a practical, material age.
The majority with their superior
education,, with almost daily dis
coveries or invention before them,
with steadily advancing science in
their view, it is not to be wondered
at when they demand to see before
they believe. We must act and
show by our conduct, open and sin
cere, that wc mean what we say,
when wc tell them we want to save
hem. Not their souls, not their
future existence, of which neither
wc nor they know anything, but
their persons, their individuality,
their manhood, their love, their self
respect, and above all, we want to
save them to lead lives which may
lighten the burden of their fellow
brothers.
Sentimentality is largely employed
and with good success with the ma
jority of men, but it must be of a
practical kind. It must be some
thing which will appeal to all our
better moral feelings, through its
material existence, which we are
able to conceive by the aid of our
senses.
Something which we can sjeo,
hear, and feel. When we are told
that some man has performed a
sacrifice for another, we are bound
to admire him. Rut friends, how
much more intense are our feelings,
how much stronger our desire to go
and do likewise, when wc know this
man, when wc have shook his honc3t
hand, and looked into the depths of
his noble eyes, and have had the
pleasure and pride to call him our
friend.
One practical scientific lecture
involving both chemical and medi
cal principals of this our mu
tual enemy, would convert more
men to tho course of tem
perance than many others, where
the audience is victimized by being
told they are sinners, they are sin
ning and must stop drink to save
their souls. Teach them fiist to
save their bodies, the soul will
thrive all right.
I havo spoken of home. Friends,
there is no place like it on earth ;
there is no place in which the in
fluence is so diicct aud powerful
and lasting as in this shrine, this
beautiful temple, over which pre
sides a loving mother.
Home, mother and love. Of all
,the sweet words in our languago,
these are tho sweetest, and I cannot
conccivo a man so depraved as not
to be influenced by them. You
will say, "My children are not
drunkards; they arc brought tip
properly enough." Granted. Rut
remember that those children will
become men and add to tho number
of those who totally abstain only if
your teachings havo been of a kind
which are lasting.
Neither you nor I, my friends,
nor yet our children, will live to seo
tho day when there will bo no more
drink ; but, through sensible, prac
tical teachings, through homo in
fluence and the aid of loving women
at homo, through piogress in our
education of practical things,
tluough the cultivation of our better
feelings towauls our fellowinan, and
through strict adherenco to the prin
ciple "practico what you preach,"
we will have at least tho satisfaction
of a hopeful future and to know
that our cause, as did tho enemies,
is advancing inch by inch, foot by
foot and step by step, until tho cry
to save ourselres will have died
away, and with its last breath w af t
ad happiness and peace over tho
world. John F. Smith,
