MR. HITCHCOCK'S REPLY TO MR.
Editou Bui.u:tin: 1 dislike
much to enter into a personal con
troversy with any one through the
medium of the press ; but, as in the
issue of your paper of the 7th inst.
Mr. Tavernier has seen lit to make
such personal attack on Judge Ly
man and myself, I feel it my duty
to reply, merely giving a plain
statement of facts.
Judge Lyman, who is one of the
administrators of the estate of J. D.
Mills of llilo, discovering that a
Mr. Larsscn had in his possession
certain pictures, which lie believed
to be the property of Mr. Mills,
wrote to Mr. Tavernier about the
same and in reply received from
him an nflidavit sworn to before, 1
believe, one of the clerks of the Su
premo Court in Honolulu. After
reading the affidavit, I, who had
been employed to act as Attorney
for the estate, commenced suit in
the Police Court of llilo for the re
covery of the two pictures. One
case was lost, the other gained.
"Wherefore both cases were appeal
ed to the Circuit Court to be held in
Slay. 1 then forwarded to a person
then in Honolulu the two pictures
to be howntoAlr. Tavernier and
get his opinion as to each. This
was done and from what 1 believed
that Mr. TaVcrnier had said in ic-
.Tovit ti llintf. nir.lilTOw I tlinUfrlit it
best to send a subpoena to cause his 1
attendance at said term of Couit.
On the day the subprena was for
warded to him, a check for 82G was
forwarded to and i cceh ed by Mr.
Tavernier, as his receipt I hold
shows, for his mileage as allowed by
law. This was sent on or about the
3rd of May. On return of Kinau
Mr. Tavernier arrived, but 1 did
not, I believe, sec him to have any
conversation with him until tho day
alter his arrival, lie then called
into my office and in the few min
utes' conversation 1 held with him,
I found lie was troubled with a very
defective memory and that it would
be useless to call him as a witness.
But feeling that it would not be
right to dismiss him then, as there
was no opportunity for him to go
hack to Honolulu, I said nothing, at
that time and kept him on at the
legal expense of one dollar a day
uutilthc steamer "left, wherefore I
paid him SO, making in all the sum
of $35, which was paid to Mr. Tav
ernier by the estate, as a witness.
Mr. Tavernier was then immediately
subpivnaed by Mr. Larsscn and re
mained there another week. "Wond
er if Mr. Larsscn paid hiin for
thatf In what way then did Judge
Lyman or myself show "the power
in strong hands" and work any
private injury to Mr. Tavernier, or
do anything to the "public detri
ment?" As to how Mr. Lyman "grossly
insulted" Mr. Tavernier, it was not
done at any time when I was pre
sent, and knowing Judge Lymnn as
well as I do and have done for thirty
years, I don't believe it. And if
any one could more "grossly in
sult" and use languago unbecoming
to a gentleman, than Mr. Tavernier
did at my office, on the afternoon
that the whole matter was finally
settled, as reported to me, he did
about Judge Lyman and myself, I'd
like to know how.
As to tho estate not having paid
Mr. Larsson for his services in tak
ing care of Mr. Mills, or the same
"remaining unrewarded," let me
say Mr. Larsscn lias been paid in
one way or another, about SGOO, for
said services. But tho estate did
refuse to pay so exorbitant a bill as
J am sorry that Mr. Tavernier,
Willi whom I've always held friendly
relations, should so forget himself
as to raako so unwarrantable an at
tack on mo. Yours, etc.,

Tho sad event took place in San

by the same stenmor. On Sunday
evening the steamer Kaala left for
Maui, returning last evening with
the bereaved husband.
Mrs. "Walsh was born on the isl

wn9 beloved by n large circle of
