The political pot is boiling. The
lightning did not strike Mulvinley
in the Hepublicnn convention, but
it played nround him nniiiiou&ly.
There were reasons why he was not

The Republican plutfoim made a
bid for the Irish note, but it was an
afterthought, and done in a mala

way. that suggests the idea that the

the sons of llnin, even the most de

of Brian Born, Wolfe Tone, Kob

The New York Sugar Tiust to
which so many ot the Hawaiian

Owing to the report of Consul
General Putnam at Honolulu that
large numbers of lepers leave that
port for the Coast, a more rigid in
spection is made, and little Minnie
Sclioltz was detained on board the
Australia by tho health authorities,
the United States Court refusing to
issue a writ of habeas corpus, on
the ground that the jurisdiction was
with the State Courts. Meanwhilo
the little girl was surreptitiously
landed by her father, and both
started overland on an emigrant
train. What tho outcome may be
I cannot tell, but if the railroad
companies had known they would
not allow her to travel. This muj'
prevent any other nlllicted people

for treatment. After all, their own
home is tho best place for them.
Minister Merrill, with his usual
desiic to help tho country where ho
is living, has written to the Stato
Department suggesting tho removal
of the embargo upon cattle shipped
from Hawaii to the Coast, with tho
view of piomoting a trade in hvo
slock between tho two countries.
He has been so far successful that
tho quarantine restrictions have been
modified to admit Hawaiian cattle
conditioned upon being taken from
tho ship and slaughtered upon ur
rival. This is the best that can bu
done at present. It is tho entering

again. In this mailer, Minister
Merrill lays the Hawaiian Kingdom
under obligations to him,
