Having heard that tho Volcano
was very active, I was very glnd to
have an opportunity to visit tho
same. When I, after a very lone
Bomo rido of 8 bouts, caruc in the
neighborhood of the Volcano house,
I saw suiokq issuing from all and
every of the numerous craclts; and,
as it was my first visit to the realms
of Pelc, it presented to me a very
interesting and novel sight. Some
times the smoke would be very
dense, completely enveloping tho
bushes, then again it would quickly
disappear, only to come out so much
Ab 1 was too tired to go down
into the crater the same night, and
also on account of rainy weather, I
concluded to wnit till tho next day.
It was a grand sight to see the
smoke and glare over the new lake,
and the volcano showed aigns of

Madame Pcle has built n magnificent
church, with a splendid perpendicu
lar steeple, tapering to a point, and
ending in a little knob. A short
distan.ee another building has been
erected, evidently the residence
of the minister. The resemblance
is very striking, so much so,
that it would be very dilll
cult on a photograph to distinguish
tliis church, that was thrown up
Sunday nisdit, Juno 2lth, from ,a
Saturday afternoon on the 7th,
the Guide and I went down into the
crater. When we arrived near to
the cone, we had to walk over a new
lava How. It was 48 hours old, and
in places very hot. This flow eman
ated from tho "spitting hole," a
small opening to the N. W. of the
cone. The heat and smoke here
were excessive, and we had to hurry
over it. Wc went near to the lake,
but as it was too lipt, wo took a seat
on the side of the cone. The smoke
was so dense, and the heal so great
that wc could not ascend the mail
man, and we had to stay where wc
The new lake I think is about 300
feet in diameter. The lava I
judged to be about lo-18 feet below
the rim, and boiling very violently,
sometimes in eight places. While
we were sitting there, the lava rose
constantly, until it came up to with
in a foot from the rim, and boiling
and hissing and splashing most
violently, sometimes throwing the
molten lava over 50 feet up in the
air. As the lake became more and
more active, and as the lava rose
higher and higher, the "spitting
Hole" showed greater anu greater
activity. There was something
awful in the sight, and what made it
more so, were the groaning, rum
bling sounds wc heard under our
feet and in the bowels of the cone.
To describe the impression it made
on mc, is impossible. Sutllce it to
say that it surpassed my wildest ex
pectations. Returning in the dark, it made
me at first a little scared to walk
over tho hot lava, and see it red hot
in every little crack. We went right
past the "Blow hole," a large rock
with several holes in it. Every now
and then a rumbling, surging sound
would be heard, always followed by
a strong blast out of one of tho
holes, and a llainc would shoot out
15 to 20 feet in fact it was so
awful, that I did not like to stay
there very long. When we came in
sight of the church, we could sec
that the Minister had lit his lamp.
He was probably pieparing his
sermon for the next day. The re
flection of the light that was shining
out of his window, could be seen on
the church tower. Round us, all
over, the activity was increasing
fast, and the sulphurous smoke be
came so dense, that we had to
hasten out of it as soon as possi
ble. Returning to the Volcano house,
a splendid meal awaited me, and I
did it full justice. After that we
6at on tho verandah watching the
fireworks below. A large increase
in the leflcction told us, that a new
How took place, and with the help of
our glasses wc could see how that
the "Spitting hole," sent columns
of lava many feet out, in a slanting
direction. It had done so when I
was down in the crater, spitting it
out some f)0 or 00 feet, but I think
it threw it a greater distance after
wards. The light was shining
brightly out of the window in tho
"Parsonage" all the time. Shortly
after midnight the glare and tho
activity decreased, and about 1
o'clock in the morning the Minister
blew out his lamp and went to bed,
and so did I.
Thanks to tho genial host and
hostess, I bpent a very pleasant
time at the Volcano house. II.
