GOSSIP AND GOSSIPS.
Boveral of Honolulu's noted gos
sip were assembled at a certain iioUsa
this morning supping tea.
I am so fond of these little ten
parties," said one of the gossips,
who stuck out Iter littlo finger whilo
holding the cup, as a sign of refined
table etiquette, and puckered her
mouth, like nn old maid trying to
smile prettily; " enn drink six
cups of tcannd more too if It would
not be impolite of inc."
After exhausting the subject of
tea making, and picking to pieces
the characters of several engaged
couples, comparing notes as to what
salary lie is getting, how much he
has saved and wlmt-shc is likely to
get from her father, the subject of a
bcarcher of females for the Custom
House, was taken up.
While one of the dear ladies was
venting her indignation upon tho
impudence of the Custom House
authorities to propose searching lady
passengers for opium, though she
knew of two women who had smug
gled the drug ashore under their
skirts, another of the gossips was
trying to hold the iloor by talking
loud and telling how many times she
had been engaged before she was
mariicd, how her husband popped
the question and what particular
gift he had that captured her, though
site hated him at first.
But this delightful creature, who
loved to talk about herself and her
self alone, was downed by a sea of
voices shouting. "I'd slap the Port
Survej'or s face if ho wanted to
search me." I'd die first." "Oh
how terrible it would be," etc., all
at the same time like so many mynah
birds.
"But if they search eyery woman
and have a lady for that purpose,"
said the one with the puckeied
mouth, "you couldn't complain."
(Chorus). "Oh! no lady would do
it." "And what's more, do you
think I'd allow the woman who
would take the place, to examine
my clothes and afterwards gossip
about them. Not much, I'd rather
stay here forever."
"Me, too," said another. "If I
should wear stocking with a darn in
them, I don't want everybody to
know it." "Plenty of my stocking
are darned, ther're too good to
throw away, they cost a dollar a
a pair, I'm not stuck up, but I don't
want evil-disposed people to talk
about what I wear."
Take another cup of tea Mrs.
Frightl'ullypowdered, said the hos
tess, do.
How strange it seems when you
coir.e home from abroad and look
down on the throng ot people on the
wharf and think you belong among
them 1 lhey look so pale and drag
ged out, you know," said Mrs. Two
laced. "What do you think of the new
railroad cars, Mrs. Twofaccd,"
asked Mrs. Talkabouthersclf. Mrs.
Twofaced "Why they look
pretty, but they ate horried inven
tions." "You sit back to back and
you don't know who might yet his
back to yours, it makes me crawl to
think about it."
"Have you ever been in the
Arlington House, Mrs. Veryreli
gious," asked the hostess, "it's too
public for me, and nothing homelike
about it." Mrs. Veryreligious
"No I've never been in the house,
but I would like to get at one of the
front windows and catch Mrs. Hash
going into Hart's to buy a cake and
see her take it home to tell the
neighbors that site made it.
(Party breaking up). .Mrs. Very
religious. Now don't forget that
the party will be at my house next
week (chorus of. good byes and the
gossips seperating into couples, talk
about the quality of tea they have
just had and criticise tho manners
of the hostess).
Here the curtain drops until one
day next week, when the very .same
scene will be repeated. Box plan
now open. Jane.
