THE DEBATING CLUB.
An interesting discussion took
place in the Debating Club last
night, on the subject of large land
holdings. Tho subject announced
for next debate was the plank in
tho Hawaiian Political Association's
platform which relates to the elec
tion of all Government ofllcials. Mr.
Heinemann resigned the treasure
ship of the Club, on account of in
tended departure from the city, and
Mr. A. Vogel was chosen to fill the
vacancy.

Chief Engineer Wilson presided
at tho regular monthly meeting of
the Board of Representatives of tho
Honolulu Firo Department, held
last evening, at tho Bell Tower. The
.Chief announced that the Interior
Department had secured the Moss
man premises, corner of Beretania
and Fort streot, as a fits for tho
new Central Station and Bell Tower.
He also stated that the erection of a
new engine house for China Engine
Company No. 5 would bo proceeded
with shortly.

afternoon in tho Association parlors,

tho chair. The attendance was
very good. Mr. Frank W. Damon
gavo a very interesting talk on
"Jerusalem and its environs," illus
trated with diagrams. It was very
much enjoyed by thoso present. A
collection was taken up amounting
to $13.50. At tbo next meeting Mr.
Chas. M. Cooko will talk on "Tho
Scandinavian Peninsular."
CHRISTMAS AUCTION SALE.

CHURCH ASSOCIATION MEETING.
Tho regular monthly meeting of
the St. Andrew's Church Association
meeting was held last evening in tho
old Cathedral building, with a fair
attendance of members. After
routine business had been trans
acted, the Rev. II. II. Gowen gave
a very interesting lecture on church
architecture, illustrated with a scries
of designs.

HEAVY EUROPEAN I1EET CHOP NEW
HAWAIIAN SUGAR AT HAND.
We are on the threshhold of the
new Sugar year in various parts of
tho world. The European Beet crop
of 1888 has been in the hand of tho
fabricauts for several weeks. The
crop will be the largest in many
years. The late estimate of. M.
Licht which was thought in some
quarters to bo extravagant, is likely
to be realized, despite the adverse
criticisms. Tho desire of sellers to
work off stock and to make con
tracts for forward delivery is looked
upon as confirmatory evidence in the
belief of a large Beet Sugar crop
in Europe in the next few months.
Despite tho favorable statistical
position as respects stocks of old
Sugar in the loading markets of the
world, new Sugar is being offered
at reduced prices. At London,
October 25th. Austrian and German
Beet Sugar was quoted at 14s lAd,
but a week later the now crop from
the same sources was offered at 12s
7Ad. The price just twelve months
before was 12s 4Jd. New crop
Brazil and Demerara Sugar was
offered in New York a few days ago
at reduced rates. Of course sonio
allowance must be inado for thoso
whose circumstances compel them
to make an early exchange of crops
for cash.
Immediately following tho offer
ing of new crop European Beet
came new crop Brazil and Demerara.
Thus far tho shipments of Brazil to
New York and othor Atlantic mar
kets have been comparatively light.
But in view of the changed condi
tion of labor in Brazil slaves hav
ing been emancipated planters will
realize as rapidly as possible. Tho
first offerings from the colony of
Demerara brought 3c cost and
freight for OG test Centrifugals, but
since then tho samo grade has been
offered nt 3go. Other West India
Islands have commenced to ship
new crop Sugar to New York. Free
shipments from Cuba, tho great
sourco of supply in the Atlantic
StatCB, will soon be in order. Tho
Java crop is now going through the
mills and four steamers aro now on
tho way with cargoes for tho Atlan
tic States. Threo cargoes of Java
havo also been bought for tho Amer
ican Refinery in this city. It wns
expected that these cargoes would
bo here this mouth. One of them
is coming by steamer. Another by
the Dlouc has been detained at
Hongkong for repairs to vessel. As
tho American Refinery wants this
dutiable Sugar for export, in order
to get the benefit of tho rebate, the
delay is annoying. The only dutia
ble Sugar here of any consequenco
is from Manila. The California Re
finery has bought liberally from tho
Philippine Islands in the past twelve
months. There aro now three ships
on the way from the Philippine Isl
ands, or entered out, with Sugar
for the California Refinery of this
city.
New Hawaiian Sugar is now com
ing to hand. Tho Lady Lampsou,
which arrived on tho 2d, brought

ands induced an early cutting of
cane. It is said that tho crop will
bo about tho samo ns Inst year, or a
little over 100,000 short tons. Tho
fleet now on tho way will bring raoro
new than old Sugar, though it is not
usual to expect much now Sugar
from the Hawaiian Islands until the
1st January. Vessels now on tho
way down will generally load back
with now crop. Tho local refineries
are well supplied with raw Sugar,
and before their stocks run out new
Sugar will bo here in abundance. It
is possible that both reflncriss may
case up a little on product, if they
have not already done so, as tho
demand is considerably less than it
was a few months ago. Tho Cali
fornia refinery has a new element to
work upon in the .product of the
new Beet factory at Watsonville. It
is hoped this industry may havo a
fair trial. To this end there should
be no disturbance in tho present
duty on foreign Sugars. The Louis
iana planters aro also entitled to a
continuance of this, protective sys
tem. They furniBlt about one-tenth
of tho supply in the Atlantic States,
and the domestic Sugar is now Book
ing a market on tho Atlantic sea

CANADJAfT RECIPROCITY.
AN OLD SCHEME REGENERATED HOW
IT CONCERNS SALMON AND
LUMBER.
The Dominion government has
scut an invitation to tho colonies of
New South Wale3, Queensland, Vic
toria and Now Zealand, to send
delegates to Ottawa, and there dis
cuss and prepare a reciprocity treaty
which shall bring about partial free
trade bBtweon Canada and thccolo
nics. The movement is one in which tho
San Francisco lumbermon, salmon
canners and the wool importers are
most vitally intprestcd, and one in
which the commission men are Bome
what concerned.
The proposition of tho Dominion
government, and the effect, if it is
carried out, aro simple. The colo
nics 'now consume great quantities
of canned goods, especially salmon,
and lumber, part of which aro pro
duced in British Columbia. The
bulk of the merchandise goes by
way of San Francisco, and all pays
a heavy duty at Sydney and Mel
bourne. The colonics in return
send Canada heavy shipments of
wool and other merchandise, which
arc subject to the Canadian duty.
Canada wants both parties to
drop the collection of these duties.
This measure, if adopted, would
give Canadian lumber, and canned
salmon the preference in the Aus
tralian trade. The salmon canners
think that in this event the entire
British Columbia pack would go to
Australia and New Zealand. TIub
would cause a big contraction in tho
exports from this port. Tho same'
is true of the lumber exports.
Canada would in return derive a
benefit from manufacturing the im
ported -wool, and it is not at all im
probable if an understanding is ar
rived at, that the old scheme of the
Canadian Pacific's, to run a line of
steamers to Honolulu and'tho Colo
nies, would bo revived.
The imperial government of Great
Britain has offered a subsidy of
15,000 annually for such a line,
and the Dominion government has
supplemented this with an offer of
15,000 annually. If to this is
added 35,000 annually, tho sum
now paid by the different colonies
for tho trans-Pacific service the
total subsidy reaches 95,000. This
is more than enough to sustain a
splendid lino of steamer. fS. F.
