THE S. C. ALLEN.
The American bark S. 0. Allen,
which arrived last Friday, from
Newcastle, N. S. V., is now dis
charging her load of coal at the
Pacific Mail steamship whaif. She
is named after our townsman, Mr.
S. C. Allen, and is a very biiperior
vessel in every respect. The Allen
waB launched May 8, 1888, from the
ynid of tho New England Ship
Building Company, Bath, Maine.
She was towed to Bostou, and thcic
loaded for Melbourne, which poit
she reached in 93 days. After dis
charging she proceeded to Newcas
tle, N. S. W., and loaded with coal
for Honolulu. The passage was
made in 14 days. After discharg
ing her coal she will load with sugar
for San Francisco, and hereafter be
employed in the island trade for
which she was specially built. Her
owners are Ronton, Holmes & Co.
of Port Townsend, and parties in
Honolulu Messrs. Bicwer & Co.
are the agents in this city.
Tho building of the Allen was
personally superintended by Captain
Thompson, her master, who was four
yeais on the C. 0. Whitmore, and
who is well known at this poit as an
able sailing master. She is built of
hard wood, and her cabins are ele
gantly finished in ash, chciry and
black walnut. The Captain's cabin
and oljlcc are beautifully fitted up
and are separated from the other
rooms by sliding doors. Theie is
eery convenience on board, one can
think of. In the Captain's olllce is
a large medicine chest, and the
vessel is fitted with a donkey engine,
and all the latest improvements.
Her registered tonnage is o'5r tons.

CAUSE OF DEFICIENCY.
The deficiency of water at the fire
on Saturday night has been ex
plained to have been caused by the
hydinnts not having been sufficiently
opened. Tho water was in the
mains at the beginning, but tho
avenues for its escape were only
partially opened. A full supply
immediately followed the complete
opening of tho hydrants.
A RlJYAL PASSENCER.
During the forenoon His Majesty
the King hailed one of the street
cars as it was passing Palace Square,
and travelled from thence to his

the course of the journey His Ma
jesty evinced a lively interest in
matters peitaining to the street rail
way service and was pleased to ex
press satisfaction with the condition
of the load and the running man

A NAME KOU NEWSPAPERS WHICH CON
1AIX3 MORE TRUTH THAN REVERENCE.
The newspaper is often called the
American Bible. The people arc
few in intelligent communities who
do not unfold and study it con
stantly. The journal of to-day is a
mosaic of biains and news. The
public has no conception of the be
wildering work involved in its com
position ; of the sleepless vigilance
it necessitates, of tho hands it em
ploys, of the brains it takes, of the
territory its purveyors cover, or the
immense expense it entails, of the
cosmopolitan tastes it caters to, of
the system to which it has been re
duced, of the daily miracle it is.
And all for three cents a copy 1
Everybody rccogni.es its power.
The editois of the great dailies are
more really President than any oc
cupant of the White House As
Lord Brougham said in England :
"The Queen is in place, but the
House of Commons is in power."
So, whoever is in olllce, tho news
paper is in power. Journalists re
cognize this. They feel, too, that
power involves responsibility. Their
purpose is to mspiie aud guide the
community. Of course, the first
duty of a newspaper is to make
money, llns is me condition 01 us
life and influence. But after this
the aim of journalists is to form, as
well as inform, public opinion. The
great dailies are, as a rule, edited in
the interest of molality and good
government. This friend, who nl
wa3s breakfasts with you, who
never bores you, who adds in appre
ciably little to your household ex
penses, who brings you all the news
and puts you cu tapport with all the
word give him your hand and
take his advice. St. Louis Repub
lican. As a steady tonic for the amity
between Germany and Italy, Kaiser
William has ordered each regimental
band to play at least once a week
the march of the Bersaglicii and the
Italian infantry mtucli.
The French chemist who discover
ed oleomargarine has now invented
a process for treating steel by which
steel, bronze and bell metal can be
mada at fabulously low prices.
