A dispatch from I.ond-n dated
February 18th, sayt: According to
letters received hoio to-day, the
British man-of-war Oral has return
ed to New Zealand after a cruise
among the South yea Islands, in or
der to discover and punish the na
tives who have of lato murdered a
number of Ktiropoain. At Apia it
was ascertained that a French half
caste and a Swede, having hem ca3t
ashore with two other men on Pen
tecost Island, were killed and then
mutilated.
At Port Sandwich it was learned
that the natives hud made a murder
ous attack on a boat's crew of a
Queensland vessel, the government
agent, Mr. Cecil, being badly
wounded. Oilier attacks on Euro
peans were also heard of there.
The Opal then left in search of in
formation of the Vernon Leu
Walker and the boat's crew at Pen
tecost Island. A friendly chief gave
information that the minder? were
unpiovokedr and the chief of the of
fending tribe was summoned to come
on board the Opal and pay the pen
alty, or he would be made to do so.
On the following morning Ihu
chief declined to visit the ship, but
offered n man and two boys m re
paration for the admitted murders.
He afterwards offered to deliver up
the actual murderers, but this
was not acceded to, as it was felt to
be a blind.
The next morning Hie Opal bom
barded the village, but the natives
had previously lied.
At Port Sandwich the French
cruiser Favert was found at anchor,
and the two commanders decided to
make examples of the natives of the
place and of the island of Paama
for the murders of Europeans com
mitted by theni. Sixty men from
each vessel were landed and pro
ceeded towaul the village, the na
tives Hying before them into the
bush. The village was burned to
the ground. The two vessels parted
with congratulatory signals, the
Opal making for Paama. On arriv
ing there the viilauo was shelled.
