HO!!. JOHN A. CUMMINS.
Sunday next, the 17th, St. Pa
trick's ilav. will be the tilth birth
day of Hon. John A. Cummins.
The cveut falling ou a Sunday, its
celebration is appointed for to-morrow.
The races at Kapiolani Park
and the numerous concomitants are
designed to commemorate this birth
day. Huge preparations have been
made, solely at the cost of Mr. Cum
mins, to make the occasion one of
general enjoyment.
It is not necessary to sny who
Hon. John A. Cummins is; because
our readers all know. A Hawaiian
born and bred, his name is a fami
liar word from Hawaii to Kiihatt, to
foreigners as well as natives. A
more generous, hospitable, and public-spirited
man cannot bo found,
lleinjr blessed with wealth, he has
been able to indulge these charac
teristic elements of his nature, and
many have been the recipients of
his bounteous hospitality, during a
long series of years ; and many are
his friends who on this birthday oc
casion sincerely wish him great hap
piness, lotig''Mlfe, and continued
health and prosperity. The Bulle

THE TWO REBELS.
Eimtoi; liui.i.LTix: I do not know
how many Hawuii.in soldiers (?) are
under the command of Col. Ash-
ford ; but J think the total force, by
skillful tactics, might be able to dis
lodge the two rebels that have for
months defied the government with
in twenty miles of Honolulu.
I admit that there is "light" in
the two rebels, and that they have
some kind of stronghold in the "Wai
anae mountains; but surely the
whole army of the Hawaiian govern
ment ought to dislodge two rebels in
a day's severe fmhting, without
waiting for the completion of the
railway to carry their war material.

ELLENSBUBCi.
The following, from the "Orc
gonian" of Feb. 1!), has been hand
ed to us for publication :
Ellensburg, W. T., constructed
twenty-five brick buildings in 1888
and already has contracts made for
sixteen to be put up in 1889. It
would not be surprising if there
were fifty brick buildings erected
there during the present year. It
is a beautifully located town and has
more enterprise and push to it than
is common, but then Ellensburg is
ambitious of being the state capital
and stands a good show for being so
within a year or two. The ambition
to bo a state c , i'al, however, never
caused in or ' r"1 up ;;rcat blocks
of brick sti : I were not needed.
Ellensburg i- ' mitral figure of a
rich region, and that place and jSToilh
Yakima must be distributing points
for all the country north of there,
which includes agricultural and
pasturage lands and a great mining
region. There is only a shadowy
idea as yet of what the future will
do for that country and what re
quirements the time to come will
make, but the people of Ellensburg
seem to be determined to deserve
great things, and that is the way to
realize them. The Yakima reserv
ation is a decided drawback to
North Yakima, as the best land
around there has been reserved for
the Indians, who arc tolerably good
as Indians, but won't develop the
country and improve it as white men
would. Crowds' of stranger's are
pouring into Ellensburg. There is
a good country around there to set
tle, and a live to gnand country
always draw people. .Enterprise

THE NOD.
The modern nod of greeting ad
mit of a great variety of gradations.
The slower the descent of. the head,
the greater is the' respect conveyed.
A quick nod is a little contemptu
ous, and looks as if there was not
quite time enough to nod in ; but a
slow nod partakes of thp character
of the .bowr a form of salutation
which, indeed, is generally under
actual consideration within the head
which isslowlv nodded. For there
is a critical line, well known to per
sons of punctillio, which divides
nodding and bowing, and occasion
ally causes do'cp seiirchings of heart
as to which -form slfotild bo Used.
The very slow nod is rather dissatis
fied with' itself, aiid feels as if it
ought to"! be a bow, tins sense of
shame not "".frequently operating
on the shouldci-f, and bringing them
down intoia soil, of repentant bow at
the conclusion. Tho nod of moder
ate speed and djpth,s.epms possessed
of tho happiebi conscience, As it
becomes shorter, quicker, and jerk
ler it loses inore and more of its
sweetness, till it ends in that faint
motion or recognition in which the
head seems rather to be thinking
what a nod would be like, than per
forming one, Globe.
