FURTHER IN REPLY TO JOHN F.
The next case referred to by Mr.
Smltfi 1b the last supper, when the
Master mndo wino the'symuol of his
blood in thu holy communion. Mr.
Smith, you. are not ignorant of tho
fact thaV'cracked brained" prohibi
tionist was only against rum being
uscd-ns a bovoragoi mid pot ngalnnl
its use chemically, jmcblianipnlly,
niedioinally or for holy purposes
if there is such a purpose requiring
it. Your intimation would lead
those who do not know as much as
you do, to ImlloyuJthatjmrohibition
ists would "not. lmvc. alio wed tho
Master o use wine in "the holy com
munion nor nllow alcohol to be used
you know to be false. 1 am not
authorized to speak for the prohibi
tionists, but from my standpoint 1
will say for the information of those
who may be misled by your insinua
tions, that prohibitionists believe
that alcohol has its legitimate uses
in the world and to expunge it
therefrom would be going back on
our civilization, but to prohibit its
use as a beverage would be taking
an advance step nnd tho most im
portant one ever taken by civilized
Axes, knives, guns, and all civil
izing implements' )iave their uses
and are a blessing to the world ;
but they are sometimes used for il
legitimate and. murderous purposes,
and society to protect itself has
passed stringent prohibitory laws to
prcventtlieir being so used. The tools
arc not prohibited but man is prohi
bited from prostituting those useful
implements for murderous purposes.
This is just what should be done
with regard to the use of alcohol.
If evil to man is caused by its use
as a beverage, such use should be
prohibited. If, man will prostitute
its usefulness to Criminal purposes
craze and kill himself with it, or,
worso still, injure and kill others
when heis so crazed rill should be
prohibited from using it as a drink
for the safety and well being of
That some can drink arid do no
harni has no inore bearing on the
case than that some can carry con
cealed weapons and donoharmwith
them ; but as all cannot all "should
be alike prohibited. All the restric
tion that prohibitionists want placed
upon drink is, that it must not be
taken into the stoiriaeh as the evils
to the many am numerous when so
used. Just follow jri your imagina
tion the river of rum that, is yearly
taken into the human stomach and.
then observe its effect. ' You' will
sec more misery add crime caused
by it in so-called civilized countries,
than from all other causes combined.
This is a statement requiring no
proof ; yet wc lind many men who
not only refuse to assist in prohibit
ing its criminal use, but actually
work fot its continuing. They would
rather see hell boil and the river of
misery and death roll on to supply
victims. They want it licensed and
protected and made honorable by
law, and so keep its channels unob
structed by prohibitionists, who
want its evil uses alone prohibited
and thus place it upon an equal foot
ing with other nuisances and crim
inality. Many, in fact all things that en
danger life and property, from the
building of wooden structures in
the heart of Targe cities, down to
petty thieving, are bylaw prohibited
except the criminal use of rum. Is
there any good reason why it should
not also be prohibited, seeing it is
the worst of all? I have said enough
on this text to show from my stand
point that prohibitionists arc consis
tent in believing the Bible a temper
ance record, and to show their con
sistency in believing alcohol useful
for many purposes, but a curso as a
drink. It is the curse wc want pro
hibited. "Where there's drinking
there is danger."
